Free dental check-up camp

Chandigarh, July 12
As many as 350 patients were provided free dental check-up, along with free medicines, on the occasion of World Population Day yesterday. The day was observed by the UT Red Cross Society and the Health Department at Government High School, Bapu Dham Colony.

Home Secretary and Secretary Health Krishna Mohan inaugurated the camp. The Chandigarh DC, who is also Chairman, UT Red Cross Society, was also present.

Elected

The following have been elected office-bearers of the NIPM (Punjab chapter) at the biennial election: chairman — Mr S.R. Saini; honorary secretary — Mr Varinder Verma; vice chairmen — Mr S.P. Bansal and Mr J.P. Singh; additional honorary secretary — Mr Jorawar Singh; and treasurer — Mr Ravinder Chadha.

Goa rally to beat Jharkhand 4-1

Down by a goal, Goa made an emphatic comeback to register a 4-1 victory over Jharkhand in their opening Cluster C qualifying round fixture of the 3rd Junior Girls Under-17 National Football Championship at the Punjab Engineering College Campus here today.

Jharkhand make the exit as they have lost both of their matches against Tamil Nadu and Goa. Now the clash between Tamil Nadu and Goa on July 14 will decide the qualifiers for quarter-final from Cluster C.

In Cluster D, Bihar outclassed Uttranchal Pradesh by 9-0. For Bihar, Niki scored four goals followed by Mamta Kumari (3), Amrita and Shilpi (one each).

Earlier, in the first match between Jharkhand and Goa, Jharkhand surprised Goa by scoring a goal in the 43rd minute through Ch. Mundali. The parity was restored in the 49th minute through M Xavier.

Falina Cardozo tilted the balance in favour of Goa by scoring two goals in the 60th and 68th minutes. Malvita Mascarenhas sealed the 4-1 win in the 77th minute.

Today, Bihar put Uttaranchal under pressure with two quick goals in the second and third minutes through Mamta. She again struck in the 33rd minute but it was Niki, who held the spotlight by scoring four goals.

In the evening session, Jammu and Kashmir beat Madhya Pradesh by 1-0 whereas Chattisgarh got the better of Pondicherry 5-1.

Neha Nishad contributed two goals (18th and 60th minute) in Chattisgarh's win. The other contributors were Suman Sunani (14 th ), Prerna Mishra (53 rd ) and R Sheha (65 th ), who netted one goal each.

For Jammu and Kashmir, the lone goal was scored by Shakshi, who after receiving a pass from Gurpreet Kour, guided the ball into the MP's goal.

The championship is being organised by the Chandigarh Football Association under the aegis of the All India Football Federation.

Modern gym at Municipal Corporation office

The Municipal Corporation has set up a modern Gym in the office complex sector 17. Krishna Mohan, IAS, Home Secretary, Chandigarh Administration inaugurated the gym here today. Surinder Singh, Mayor, P.S. Aujla, Commissioner, Subhash Chawla, Councilor, Pardeep Chabra, Councillor-cum-Chairman Employees Welfare Committee were also present besides the other officers and staff of the corporation.

The corporation has purchased two treadmills and cycles each besides a multistation apparatus, inclining/declining benches, open weights and other equipment at a cost of Rs 8.65 lakh. The gym is air-conditioned. It will remain open from Monday to Saturday.

Dept to auction wheat bags

Chandigarh, July 12
The Department of Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs will dispose of 11,117 empty wheat/rice/sugar bags of 50 kg size and 786 empty plastic bags of the same size on July 20 through a public auction, a press note said here today.

The highest bidder will have to deposit 25 per cent of the total value of the stock as auction money after close of the bid on the spot.
