Ghulam Ali live at Rock Garden
SD Sharma

Chandigarh, June 22
The quaint ambience of Rock Garden was witness to a musical soiree by the legendary ghazal maestro, Ghulam Ali, organised by the Airtel in association with HDFC Bank and Indian Oil here today.

Adulation greeted Ghulam Ali as he opened up the concert with a spell of mercurial sargams delving deep into the lower and tenor octaves before rendering a new ghazal ‘Toa kya ye the hai tujhe umar bhar nahin milna’ penned by Salim Kauser. With a mundane start the concert gradually attained the mystic touch as the ustad displayed the finer nuances of the musical art in Addem Hashmi ‘s classic ‘Naa jaane kab vo palt ayen..’ He replenished the He could not resist the temptation of farmaish from the inquisitive audience and doled out Maulana Hazrat Mohani’s ghazal ‘Chupke chupke..’ immortalized by him. Weaved in the soulful musical notes of raga ‘Bheem Plasi..’ set to Roopak taal , the ghazal had scaled the horizons of popularity which he recorded way back in 1964. He explained the thematic essence of various couplets which evinced more sobriety and intoxication in the audience.

He was however at his best in’ Dil mein ikk lehar si..’ especially when he improvised the ‘lehar’ in all its manifestations.

On demand he obliged the audience with Punjabi numbers including ‘Ikk mein hovan’ from a new Punjabi album recorded with Kavita Krishanmoorthy. He brought alive the pathos, romantic agony and protest of Shiv Kumar Batalvi in ‘Ki puchh de o haal faqiran da’ and in ‘Heer’ the slumbering love legend of Punjab. As and when his sore throat betrayed he replenished the melodic flow of presentations through expert vocalisation of sargams, short alaaps and potent lyrical enunciation with consummate ease. An accomplished set of musicians including Arshad Khan, Imrat Khan, Bholi ji, Khalid mustfa provided commendable accompaniment.

Earlier the versatile ghazal singer, Naim Ali , foremost disciple of Ghulam Ali, regaled the audience with his compositions and a few ghazals immortalised by his ustad and mentor. His voice had youthful freshness and the decisive influence of the gayaki style of Ghulam Ali was eloquently perceptible in all his renderings like ‘Ham saath chal rhen hai..’ Tumne maikahan nigahon mein and popular Punjabi numbers.

Rajni holds a suffering Simran in her arms

Chandigarh, June 22
Pain is her destiny, at least as of now. Born with a malignant boil on the right side of her hips, four-month-old Simran has been braving the pain since the day she was born. With each passing day her forbearance is giving way, while the road to recovery still seems distant.

But there is little Simran’s mother Rajni can do. She has no moral or financial support to fight this battle, nor does she have the will to do so. Left in the lurch by her alcoholic husband, she spends the days caressing the child, whose suffering she is unable to bear. With another 11-year-old daughter to fend for, Rajni is awaiting a miracle that can turn the tide of her misfortune.

The immediate concern for the hapless mother is corrective surgery for the child who cannot even rest on her back for evident reasons.

The infection, which appeared on Simran’s right hip in the shape of a small sore when she was born, has spread manifold and has obstructed the child’s natural movement is all directions.

“She can’t even move her legs because of this infection. I have to hold her in my arms all day long because she can’t sleep by herself. For some days after her birth, I did not understand what was happening. But when I saw the sore growing into a tumour, I rushed Simran to GMCH-32 which is closer to where we live at Hallomajra,” Rajni tells the Tribune where she was brought by a well-wisher.

In fact, she had to go walking all the way to the hospital as she had no money. The doctors who attended to Simran some three months ago said she must be treated for the infection immediately if she had to live. Rajni says, “They did not tell me what caused the sore but they said the surgery should be conducted immediately. With no resources and guidance I returned home empty-handed, only to see my daughter going from bad to worse. My husband is to be found nowhere. I have not even given my rent for four months.”

While Rajni prays for the child to get better, her elder daughter Pooja fills her days with emptiness. She had to drop out of school due to the family’s poor financial condition. She studied only up to class V, and has not gone to school for a year. She recalls, “My father would blow up all the money in liquor. So there would be none left for paying my fee.

Now he has gone away even though he knew my mother was expecting a baby. My sister is also suffering and there is no one who will lend a helping hand.”

PGI Childline lends support

On being sounded by The Tribune today, the volunteers of the PGI Childline immediately responded to the case of Simran, who is losing precious time with each passing moment. Set up to rescue and shelter children in abandonment, the PGI Childline is a child support service started under directions of the Union Government. Its volunteers contacted the family at Hallomajra today. Tomorrow the child will be examined at the surgery ward of PGI’s Advanced Pediatric Centre. And though the PGI Childline volunteers have committed that all help will be extended for the child’s corrective surgery, much more financial help would be required to rehabilitate Simran and her family.

Contributions can be sent in cash or as cheques in the name of Director, PGI and deposited with Ms Manju Wadwalkar, PGI’s Public Relations Officer and can also be contacted at 2756003.
