PAU to boost groundnut cultivation
Tribune News Service

Ludhiana, May 23
Under the project revival of Green Revolution, Sir Rattan Tata Trust, Mumbai, has in a collaborative research project with Punjab Agricultural University adopted two villages — Badesha and Tibba — in Sangrur district.

The project focuses on the cultivation of groundnut for which Sangrur soil is well suited. The project aims at upscaling the groundnut cultivation, as paddy causes "excesses" on the land. The mechanization of groundnut cultivation operations is an integral part of the Rs 23- lakh project. For this, the trust has provided planters, diggers and threshers.

According to Director of Extension Education, Dr S.S.Gill, who visited the two villages to oversee the project and to participate in the groundnut "field day" the healthy crop groundnut was a promising start to the project, which also focuses on "water management and hardy weeds", both part of the adaptive research component of the project. For extension activities and demonstration purposes, groundnut crop is sown on 40 acres in two villages. The crop is closely monitored by village-level workers under PAU and Trust.

Dr Gill said groundnut fetches good price in the market. It was Rs 1520 per quintal last year. The farmers of the two villages have been assured of compensation if groundnut was sold below the minimum support price.

In Punjab, groundnut is sown on nearly 4,300 hectares with a production of around 3,600 tonnes (2004-2005). The average yield of groundnut in the state is 905 kg per hectare.

Dr Gill said the improved varieties for irrigated traits SG99, M522 and SG84, as well as for rainfed M548 areas are rich in oil content. He said besides selling groundnut straw, farmers could save by extracting oil for domestic use and also use the groundnut cake for the livestock. He further said given the yield potential of the recommended varieties of groundnut, farmers could recover up to 60 kg kernels from 1 quintal groundnut and extract about 21 kg oil from these kernels, which could be used for domestic purposes.

SIFT to tie up with foreign institutes

Ludhiana, May 23
The Sportking Institute of Fashion Technology (SIFT) is all set to tie up with a few foreign institutions for the advanced training of the students. SIFT which has already a tie- up with the Pearl Academy of Fashion, New Delhi, is one of the premier fashion technology institutes in the region.

According to Mr Raj Awasthi, Chairman and Managing Director of the Sportking Group of Industries, which runs SIFT, the idea is to generate international standard human resources for the industry at the local level. He pointed out, despite the presence of world class brands in Ludhiana, not many professionals are prepared to come and work here.

He said, the main idea of setting up SIFT was to cater to the growing demand of the industry. He remarked, ‘‘in a globalised business atmosphere, we require global talent and I have a firm belief that we can generate it here’’. He observed, ‘‘when we can generate the world class entrepreneurs in Ludhiana, we can always generate world class professionals here’’.

SIFT, according to Mr Awasthi, has been very selective about the choice of students. He said, ‘‘we have very limited number of seats available for various courses and our selection procedure is at a par with the premier institutions in the country’’". He disclosed that there was no compromise on the merit even if the institute has to keep some seats vacant. "We have set a minimum cut off performance below which we do not consider anybody even if the seats are available", he said, while adding, ‘‘but it has never happened so far as too many talented students join the fashion technology now’’.

Mr Awasthi said much against the common notion that the brilliant students mostly opt for engineering or medicine, quite a number of them are choosing fashion designing as their career out of their preference. ‘‘We are having students with outstanding grades’’, he said, while adding, since designing offers creative opportunities to the students, some best brains have taken up the course. Bar panel chief for balanced approach on quota issue
Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, May 23
The Chairman of the Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana today urged the UPA government to have balanced approach towards the reservation issue.
He said the issue had to be dealt with care and for the welfare of the country in mind instead of narrow political interests of certain leaders.

He added that social justice was must. Even the Constitution provides for the same but social justice should not only be viewed as a tool to get votes but it should be used as a vehicle to build the nation rather than dividing the society in castes, creed, races and create hatred.

Mr Dhanda maintained that in a democratic set-up every individual had the right to express his view and resort to peaceful agitation. It was incumbent upon the government to have a balanced approach and reactions to the people's will and wishes and should not allow any such agitation to take form of ‘‘ rebellion’’.

He was addressing the agitating doctors sitting on dharna outside OPD of Dayanand Medical College and Hospital. Expressing concern, he said it was unfortunate that the government was not responding and coming forward for meaningful interaction and negotiations with the agitationists who are feeling insecure in view of the government's postures.
