"Product design students are directly absorbed by industry"

The prospects of integrated product design are immense, says H.C.Garg, Chairman, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Guru Jambheshwar University, Hisar. Excerpts from an interview:

What does Integrated Product Design and Manufacturing basically entail?

It is an advanced and highly specialised discipline that integrates the fields of product designing and manufacturing. Designing comprises the theory part, while manufacturing involves the practical aspect. Since both concepts are inter-related, we have rolled these into an integrated programme.

Tell us about the new course.

A high-tech workshop comprising the latest and state-of-the-art equipment is being set up on the university campus. The idea is to get orders from the industry directly and deliver them the required products. It will give the students a sound practical exposure to this field, besides generating funds for the university.

Which sectors will the discipline cater to?

We aim to design and manufacture sophisticated products for the aerospace industry, defence sector and the automobile industry at the outset.

What is the eligibility for joining the course?

The department is running a B.Tech degree programme in Mechanical Engineering. We have introduced a two-year M.Tech programme in Integrated Product Design and Manufacturing from this academic session. For admission to this course, we are considering graduates in mechanical and production engineering. The candidates will be admitted to the course on the basis of their GATE score, in addition to their performance in an entrance test to be conducted by the university itself.
