Preparing for Merchant Navy

the Mariners Society Chandigarh recently organised a seminar on "Merchant Navy as a Career" which was addressed by Capt S. Mukherjee, Deputy General Manager (Fleet Personnel), Shipping Corporation of India Ltd ( SCI), a Government of India enterprise.

The SCI takes in nearly 250 new officers and engineers every year for its fleet. During the talk, Capt Mukherjee provided information regarding eligibility criteria, preparation required, the selection process and various avenues for joining the Merchant Navy, according to a Press release.

The Government of India is also offering certain incentives to girls to join the Merchant Navy.

Over the next month, the Mariners Society Chandigarh will offer guidance free of cost to underprivileged children, girls and those belonging to the SC/ST, to help them in preparing for the entrance test and interviews scheduled for June and July, 2006. The last date for filling the form is May 26, 2006.

Infosys training programme

Concerned over the shortage of skilled manpower for IT as well as other industries, software major Infosys will spend around $ 4 million for its educational initiative ‘Campus Connect’, aimed at enhancing quality of engineering students in the country.

The company is also looking at expanding its ongoing training programme, under which it trains students belonging to the Backward Classes.

"Under this initiative, we select students under a specific educational eligibility criteria, and provide them with technical as well as personality development training," Infosys HR head Mohandas Pai said in Mumabi recently.

"We are developing a large training facility at Mysore," Pai added. — PTI
