7 students in Class VIII exam merit list

Seven students from local schools figure in the merit list of the middle standard examination results of which were declared here today.

Nancy of Shastri Model School has stood first in the town and has been placed 136 on the merit list. Wahab Mittal, Atual Jaswal and Navpreet Singh of Paragon Senior Secondary School, Sector 69, have been placed 182, 281 and 376 on the merit list, respectively. While, Wahab Mittal has secured the second position Gaganpreet of Gem Public School has got the third position in the town.

Mr MBS Shergill, administrated of Pargaon Senior Secondary School, claimed in a press note today that the merit list contained the maximum number of students (3) from his school.

Dy Mayor’s wife denied bail

In a significant development, the Additional District and Sessions Judge (ADSJ), Mr B.K. Mehta, today denied bail to Ms Harneet Singh, wife of the Deputy Mayor, Mr H.S. Lucky, in a case of theft of clothes from a Sector 17 garment shop. The interim bail earlier granted to Ms Harneet by another the ADSJ, Mr RS Baswana, ended today.

However, the ADSJ granted anticipatory bail to the alleged second accomplice of the Deputy Mayor’s wife, Jaspal Kaur Bhattal, and directed her to join investigations. The bail application of the salesman, Raju, was also allowed by the judge subject to a number of conditions. He has been asked to report to the investigation agency at regular interval.

The salesman had been in judicial custody since April 18 and the court had kept his bail application pending thrice.

Following the rejection of the bail application, sleuths of the crime branch conducted raids at different places in the city to arrest the Deputy Mayor’s wife. The counsel for Ms Harneet said they would move the Punjab and Haryana High Court to seek relief against the orders of the ADSJ.

The ADSJ had fixed the hearing of all the three applications today. The police application against the grant of interim bail was taken up in the morning, the application for the anticipatory bail of Ms Jaspal Kaur Bhattal was taken up at 2 pm. The bail application of Raju had already been heard and orders were to be pronounced.

While opposing the bail application of Ms Harneet, the crime branch officials said the salesman during interrogation in Burail Jail had confessed to the involvement of the two women in thefts. He had handed over clothes to the two women on three different occasions.

During questioning on May 21, Ms Harneet did not answer any of the questions and kept on hiding the facts, said the police officials in a written statement submitted before the ADSJ.

The police demanded custodial interrogation to question her about contradiction between her and her husband’s statement recovery of clothes worth Rs 3.82 lakh, time period during which the clothes were stolen, motive behind the theft, the exact number of persons involved in the theft and the user of the mobile number 98151-91200. Meanwhile, the Skoda Car of the Deputy Mayor was released from Sector 17 police station today.
