A school cricket team was being coached. After batting, bowling and fielding practice, the coach called the players for a new exercise. "What is that, sir?" a player asked. The coach said, "Here is a TV camera. You will be asked questions and lured by the media to answer them. But your skill will lie in how you can remain silent in front of the Press". Another student said, "But what is the use of this exercise?" "This exercise will save you from any kind of embarrassment and consequent disciplinary action from the BCCI. This exercise is more important than the actual playing of the game," the coach explained. Virender Sehwag has been reprimanded by the BCCI and asked to keep his mouth shut in front of the Press. He had recently aired his views on the issue of burnout of players due to the lack of spacing between the Test series. I feel when a cricketer is asked to comment on the selection process, the BCCI or fitness of the players, he should start airing his views on hockey, football or even agriculture. If there is something serious to be said, the players could use their duplicates. Imagine Sehwag taking his
duplicate to a studio to speak about the game. If anything he says goes
wrong, Sehwag could always say, "Sorry I didn’t say anything. It
was my duplicate who made this statement." |
