THE summer holidays leave the youth with plenty of free time, which many want to utilise for gaining some professional experience. Today’s youth, living in the age of globalisation, is not content with just spending their summer break within the protected four walls of their homes, watching TV, chatting on the Net or sleeping. They want to make the most of this period by taking up part-time jobs. With the upcoming IT industry and the growing presence of MNCs in Chandigarh and its adjoining areas, more and more opportunities are available to the city youth now. Part- time jobs provide them with some pocket money and experience, without interfering with their regular studies. Various call centers, telecom companies, newspapers, private banks, fast-food joints and others offer part time jobs to students. Besides, there are many other jobs available like door-to-door marketing, product promotional surveys, offline data editing and typing jobs, road shows, exhibition, etc. Some students take up these jobs just for fun and to earn some extra pocket-money. Similarly, Sandeep Thakur is doing his MBA and side by side working on a product promotional project for a medical company. He says that he belongs to a small town in Himachal Pradesh but wanted to pursue his studies in Chandigarh. So, he decided to bear part of the expenses by taking up this part-time job. "Besides helping me pay for my studies, this job is providing me a valuable marketing experience that will add to my professional qualifications by the time I complete my MBA," he adds. Not just boys, but more and more girls are also keen to take up these jobs with full zeal.`A0 Saadgi Sachdeva, an 18- year-old student awaiting her plus two results, has in the meantime started working as a counsellor for SVM Computers. She says, ‘This is my first job and I was delighted to receive my first salary last month, with which I purchased a new cell phone. Apart from getting to ear some money, this job is helping me improve my communication skills and giving me the confidence to face interviews," adds Saadgi. Most of the companies are interested in hiring freshers. They are looking for smart, confident, energetic, youngsters with good communication skills and an aptitude to learn. According to S.K Bhartiya, chairman of Smart Talks Netcom Pvt Ltd., a company providing training and placement services, the number of job applicants is the highest during the summer months. And in many instances, students who initially take up jobs just for a few months, ultimately end up sticking to that particular profession and pursue their higher studies through correspondence. For instance, Prashant Sharma, who joined as a call center executive during the summer vacation last year, decided to continue with this job and is now purusing his studies through correspondence. In today’s highly competitive scenario, these part-time summer jobs thus not only make students financially independent, they also help them gain self-confidence.
