Right time to sow paddy
Ludhiana, May 11 Research scientists have advised farmers to go in for seed treatment before sowing to save the crop from primary seed-borne infection. Fields should be ploughed taking advantage of the recent rain, as it will help in reducing weed problem, particularly of perennial weeds. The university has already launched a
campaign to create awareness and educate the farmers about benefits of delayed transplantation of paddy and it should not be done before June 15 to save water. PAU agrometerologists have, in a statement
said, that cotton sowing had been delayed considerably due to the non-availability of canal water and farmers as such could not follow the recommended package of
practices. Field reports from Krishi Vigyan Kendra and district extension specialists reaching PAU indicate that sowing of cotton was slow and staggered. PAU’s word of caution for cotton growers is “avoid sowing cotton in this month, follow clean cultivation and destroy weeds ‘kanghi and preeti’. Sunflower growers should ensure regular, adequate irrigation and not allow the crop go thirsty at the flowering, soft and hard dough stages. Farmers should grow non-leguminous crop mix of maize and cowpea for nutrients. There are reports of viral attack on muskmelon in Kapurthala, Jalandhar and Hoshiarpur. This is more on early sown crop. Farmers must watch out for aphid and its vector and keep it under control during crop season and spray for downy mildew, whose incidence is increasing. |
