Training for surveillance teams begins
Chandigarh, May 10 Under the National Surveillance Programme for Communicable Disease (NSPCD), Department of Community Medicine, School of Public Health, has been established as a sub-nodal centre for surveillance in PGIMER. The Director-General of health services, Haryana, Dr Avinash Sharma, inaugurated the training session and said now Haryana was implementing this programme. She also laid emphasis on importance of surveillance in health system and how health system could improve its reporting about different diseases. Prof. Rajesh Kumar welcomed the delegates and discussed the aim and objectives of the training programme. Participants from Haryana and Rajasthan shared experiences and their expectations from this training. Dr J.S. Thakur gave the vote of thanks and discussed about the trainings programme, its context and contents. In this batch, about 30 candidates from Haryana and Rajasthan are taking part. The project will cover the entire country in a phased manner. Chandigarh and Haryana will be covered in phase II and Punjab in phase III. The 6-day training programme will continue up to the weekend. |
Governor lauds role of Help Care India
Panchkula, May 10 Such medical check-ups would help in cultivating a healthy generation, eventually a boon to build an ideal progressive society and the state, he added. He was addressing organisers, social activists and beneficiaries of free medical aid being provided at Ms Tej Rani Khullar Red Cross Memorial Polyclinic, Panchkula, which was being jointly run by the Health Care India (HCI) and District Red Cross Society of Panchkula. Dr Kidwai reiterated the resolve of the Haryana Government to help the physically challenged persons in the state. The Red Cross Societies in all districts were conducting a survey to identify physically challenged persons so as to provide them artificial limbs, hearing aids, tricycles and wheelchairs. He lauded the role of the Help Care India, social organisation, in imparting free education to the poor children. He interacted with students and staff of the school being run in the polyclinic. Earlier, the Governor distributed hearing aids and appliances to 65 physically challenged persons, besides honouring donors, team of dedicated doctors and other paramedical staff of the polyclinic. Brijendra Singh, Deputy Commissioner and president of the Panchkula Red Cross Society, revealed that the clinic had proved beneficial for labourers working in the industrial area and people living in slums. He said a health camp would be organised at Morni soon. Dr Brig M.L. Kataria, Chairman of the Health Care India, said the HCI had been running 21 such health care centres in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh for the past 20 years. The polyclinic at Panchkula was providing free consultation by highly qualified and experienced doctors in various faculties of medical science, which include cardiology, ENT, eyes, gynaecology, dental surgery and general OPD. The polyclinic was providing free medical facilities like X-ray, ECG, clinical lab tests and free medicines to patients, added the administrator, Wg- Cdr H.L. Ratta (retd). |
Five city hockey players for Youth Asia Cup camp
Chandigarh, May 10 Those selected are Harjit Singh, Rupinder Pal Singh, Simranjeet Singh, Sandeep Singh (senior) and Dharamvir Singh. The camp will be held attending the camp to be held at Mahindra Stadium, Mumbai, from May 18 to June 7. Jasbir Singh Bajwa said, “All are under my training at the academy since its inception in 2002. This would be a good learning experience for them. All are hardworking players and good in their respective areas, especially Rupinder Pal Singh and Dharamveer Singh, who were also contenders for the Asia Cup tournament held at Hyderabad in November last. It is hard to find a fullback player like Rupinder Pal Singh, who has speed, stamina and skill to execute goals. He has got the calibre of a world-class player and I think he would definitely be an asset for our national squad. So is another forward line player, Dharampal Singh, who is out rightly a player with speed and great distribution sense.” “Centre half Simranjeet Singh is proficient in drag flicking, which is important for a balanced team and right half Sandeep Singh senior and Harjit Singh are masters in making game strategy,” he said. Talking about their preparation, Bajwa said, “They had undergone a special class yesterday evening where they were taught basic principles of the game and they had been told to be disciplined. This is their first step towards stardom. I hope they would definitely make our city proud with their expertise in stickwork.” All five have been recently promoted to class X in Government Model High School, Sector 42. City team routs Bihar in b’ball meet
Chandigarh, May 10 The main scorers for the winners were Satish Kumar 19, Dalbir Singh 14 and Ratna Prasad 9 while Mahinder Kumar 13 and Tarun Kumar Meena 13 were the main contributors for the losers. In the second match, the NES sector beat the J & K Sector team 62-35. Bijender Singh 23, Balwan Singh 11 and Bhupesh Kumar 18 scored mainly for the NES team while S.S. Negi 18 and Sashi Kumar 18 narrowed the margin for the J&K Sector team. In another match, the Northern Sector team thrashed the Eastern Sector team 72-41 where Sanjay Singh 21, Ashfaq Ahmad 13 and Sunil Negi were the main scorers for the NS team. Vishal Solanki, Santanu Das and S.S. Mohanty scored 14, 13 and 6 points, respectively, for the ES side. The Southern Sector team defeated the RAI Sector team by a huge margin in the last match of the day. Nishi Kant 19, P.C. Rajesh 15 scored for the winners while Gyan Chand 10 mainly contributed for the losers. |
Carrom tourney from May 17
Chandigarh, May 10 In this tournament, Singles events will be conducted in the senior, junior and the sub-junior categories under men and women sections. A player must be below the age of 18 years for participation in the junior event while players below the age of 14 years are eligible for participation in the sub-junior category as on December 31, 2006. Interested players may submit entries with Diwan Singh Aithani, assistant general secretary of the association. The tournament will be organised under the aegis of the Chandigarh Carrom Association. The entries will be closed on May 13 at 5 p m. |

Panchkula, May 10 Twelve selected teams from all over the country will vie for top honours in the championship to be conducted on the league-cum-knockout basis.
