Medicos light candles of hope, protest against quota
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, May 2
Responding to a nationwide call in protest against the proposed enhancement in reservations for underprivileged sections, medicos staged yet another dharna in Sector 17 this evening. Today's protest lasted for over two hours.

Gathering in large numbers at Matka Chowk, students, interns and junior doctors from Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32 and General Hospital Sector 16 expressed their anguish by lighting candles and carrying on with their rally despite rain.

This they did to reaffirm hope in an amicable solution to the problem created by Central Government's sudden and retrogressive step of providing another cushion to the already comfortable SCs, STs and OBCs.

The rally was, by no means, a routine exercise in protest and demonstration. It went beyond the underlined motive by managing to unite students from various institutions.

The students - about 200 - were marching in response to the call of protest given by medical students in Delhi. "Similar protests", said student representative of GMCH-32 Dr Adarsh Sai Jindal, "are also being held in Patiala, Amritsar, Mumbai and Bangalore. We will continue to fight till we bring victory home."

That the students were spirited enough to overcome obstacles in the way of their planned protest was evident from the way they went ahead despite rains. Starting from Matka Chowk, where they spent 20 minutes lighting candles and initiating a candlelight procession, the protestors went to Sector 17 commercial area to make their woes public.

They moved around the entire sector to assemble again at Neelam Cinema complex where they placed their candles before leaving for homes. Their only grudge today was the absence of support from Punjab Engineering College and Panjab University.

Manik, also a final year student at GMCH-32 said, "We had expected a good response from our friends at PU and PEC, but they did not join us today. We were however joined in the march by students from Ayurvedic College and GH-16. This day was only meant to register our complaints. We will take the fight further as days pass by."

Students plan to submit another memorandum to Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Gen SF Rodrigues tomorrow. They had submitted one earlier when they held a protest at Matka Chowk a few days ago.
