Making CVs for others
A write choice

Corporate India is increasingly using the services of people who specialise in writing CVs as per the hiring trends in industry, writes Arvinder Kaur

A Curriculum Vitae (CV) is a personalised account of a person’s work experience, educational background, and skills. If you are good at penning it, you can, in fact, make a career out of it by writing the resumes of other job-seekers.

It pays to highlight others’ skills

CV writing is the newest career option in India Inc, which is on a hiring spree and in most cases initial interviews are conducted through the Internet.

Age is no bar for becoming a CV writer, the more experienced a person is, the more he earns. Even by sitting at home and working for a placement service, the CV writer can earn up to Rs 50,000 per month. "These resume writers are highly skilled and qualified professionals who have vast experience in this field. So, a person doing a CV of a person from finance would be a CA essentially. A CV of an IT professional would be made by a senior person from the same field," says Richa Malhotra of a placement agency.

"Employers are busy people and they hardly spend more than 30 seconds on a resume when they have 500 more to scan through. They are not interested in a person’s entire history as they just want to know what he is best at," says Malhotra, noting "the CV writers clearly showcase the job seeker’s key skills."

Experience in industry counts

While there are no professional schools teaching CV writing, Payal Dhar, head of CV writing team with a placement portal, says, "CV writers are essentially people who have put in 15-20 years in various industries, with good communication skills, and are aware of recruiting trends in the market."

"The CV writer should have an upbeat profile, must be abreast of what’s happening in the industry, who’s hiring and who’s firing," says Dhar.

Placement agency is the place to be in

For those who want to start their career as a CV writer, most placement agencies provide freshers with in-house training, and specialise them in a particular industry, says Malhotra.

"CV writing is a time-consuming work. It takes from few days to a week to write a CV. Experienced CV writers do up to one CV a day and earn around Rs 30,000 or more, depending on the profile of the person whose resume has been made," says Malhotra.

CV writing is still a very niche profile and it is the BPO boom which led to the emergence of this career, but as of today it has spread across retail, banking, insurance and other areas. These sectors hire about 200,000 employees a year, says Dhar.

"The demand supply gap is very wide in the industry today. But growth prospects are very high... in fact, sky is the limit," says Dhar.
Besides professional CV writers, a number of websites have also come up promising to "create a resume that will impress even the most discerning employer and put you ahead of the competition for that dream position!" PTI
