Experiments with nature

Galileo’s theories equated nature with a mathematical equation.
Galileo’s theories equated nature with a mathematical equation

Galileo is the father of our modern understanding of motion, mechanics and physics. With a set of apparently simple but profound experiments, he unlocked the mysteries of mass and speed.

In The Father of Science Saturday 9 p.m., the National Geographic Channel relives the life of Galileo and showcases how a wooden ramp and a bucket of water rocked the foundations of the Catholic church and created the age of reason.

Galileo startled the world by proclaiming that God’s book of nature was a mathematical equation that can be solved by experimentation. His observations of the heavens made him an outspoken supporter of the view that the Earth rotates around the sun.

It was such a radical idea that Galileo was brought to trial and faced execution at the age of 70. But the church was too late. By then, his legacy had been set into motion.

Find out more about the man whose books and ideas spread through the world like fire as he ushered in the age of reason.

After bagging the best actor in female category for the portrayal of Ananya in Ek Ladki Anjani Si on Sony, 18-year-old Kanchi Kaul is on cloud nine.

"I am glad that my work has been appreciated. I am inundated with offers from top production houses but I don’t want to hurry things up," says Kanchi.

"I love playing Ananya. She is like me. She is loving and caring. She’s modern and at the same time Indian," says Kanchi who had modelled for Clearasil, Johnsons, Pantene and Sangini Diamonds.

"I am happy playing the lead and will think of other offers only when I get tired of this serial or it gets over." — NF
