Dr Swami to attend conference in Atlanta

Chandigarh, April 6
Prof H.M Swami, Director-Principal, Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, has been invited to attend an international conference on ‘‘Infectious Diseases in Women’’ to be held in Atlanta from March 16 to 18. He has been invited by the office of the Minority and Women’s Health, Atlanta, USA.

He will chair the conference and present his paper on ‘‘A study of observing fast among women in Chandigarh, India’’. Prof Swami has been invited to the conference in recognition of his contributions in the field of Community Medicine and for rendering distinguished contribution in the field of medical education and research.

ICC panel visits PCA stadium

Mohali, April 6
A panel of five officials of the International Cricket Council, including Tony Still, Rick Jemison, M.H Dudhia, Prataal Raj and Mustafa Raj, visited the Punjab Cricket Association stadium here today to check the facilities at the stadium for the forthcoming ICC Champions Trophy matches. The matches will be played in the stadium in October this year.

The panel checked all facilities available in the stadium but the main stress was on the television coverage, which includes uplinking, camera positions, commentator boxes and 
branding.

The panel was also accompanied by the officials of Nimbus Productions, the company having the rights to relay the ICC tournaments. The panel spent more than five hours in the stadium and had a lengthy discussion with PCA officials on all aspects of holding the matches except technical details.

The officials also apprised the PCA officials of their requirements regarding extra commentator boxes and other demands. The PCA officials assured them of fulfilling all requirements of the ICC.

However, the officials seemed impressed with the stadium and expressed their happiness and satisfaction over the facilities available at PCA.

18 probables for tennisball cricket

Chandigarh, April 6
Eighteen probables have been selected for a coaching camp by the Tennisball Cricket Association of Chandigarh. The final team will be picked up from the camp to represent Chandigarh in the 11th Sub-Junior National Tennisball Cricket Championship to be held at Bangalore from April 20 to 23.

The selected probables have been directed to report to coach Girish Bhanot at St Kabir Public School, Sector 26, on April 8 at 4 p.m. The names of the probables are: Shankar Nair, Rahul Thakur, Navi Bansal, Nikhil Sharma, Ajay Powar, Sarabjot Singh, Narinder Partap Singh, Sandeep Kohli, Tegjit Singh, Pulkit Sood, Mukul, Sonu Malik, Avesh Dhull, Shubham Sachdeva, Shreshtha Nirmohi, Amish Sharma and Nitin Sharma.

Car rally tomorrow

Chandigarh, April 6
A car rally to spread awareness on the declining sex ratio in the region will be flagged off from Taj Chandigarh on April 8 at 9 a m. The rally, in which more than 100 vehicles are expected to participate, will pass through Panchkula, Kalka, Solan, Shimla and Kufri before terminating at Chail.

This is the second rally being organised by the Georgian Association (North), an association of alumni of military schools. Last year, the association also held a car rally with a message “Save the Deodhars”. — TNS

Table soccer meet from April 14

Chandigarh, April 6
The Punjab State Table Soccer Association and the Table Soccer Federation of India are organising an all-India open table soccer tournament in Saffron City School, Fatehgarh Sahib, from April 14 to 16.

More than 300 participants are expected to participate.

Entries for the meet should reach Mr Amardeep Singh Bakshi by April 10.

11 stations to monitor quality of water

The Central Pollution Control Board has decided to set up at least 11 new stations to know the quality of water in the city drains, underground water and Sukhna Lake. The monitoring stations will be set up in Sectors 15, 22, 34, 47, Palsora, Dhanas and Dadu Majra villages.

A decision in this regard was taken at the meeting of the Chandigarh Pollution Control Committee under the chairmanship of Mr Lalit Sharma, Advisor to the UT Administrator. Also present on the occasion were Mr S.K.Sandhu, Finance Secretary, Mr Ishwar Singh, Director Environment and Ms Yash Bala of the local chapter of the Indian Medical Association.

A press note here today said that besides monitoring the water inflow to Sukhna Lake at different places, the lake will also come under the scanner of a bio-monitoring unit during the current financial year. The committee cleared a budget outlay of Rs 1.63 crore for the year 2006-2007.

The committee this year will be updating the inventory of the water polluting industries. Strict action will be taken against the defaulters and a drive will be launched to ensure compliance of the standards of the pollution control agencies. The committee has made separate proposals towards checking the air and noise pollution in the city.

Tejveer Singh named SAS Nagar DC

Chandigarh, April 6
Mr Tejveer Singh, currently posted as Deputy Commissioner, Patiala, has been named the first Deputy Commissioner of SAS Nagar district.

A 1994-batch IAS officer, Mr Tejveer Singh was the Assistant Personal Secretary to the Chief Minister before he became DC Patiala.

He has also remained SDM Anandpur Sahib and ADC Ludhiana.

He would be joining at SAS Nagar on April 14, the day the district comes into being.
