Vegetables, flowers showcased
Samrala, March 17 According to Dr Harmail Singh, Horticulture Development Officer, Samrala, flower and vegetable growers from all states participated. Experts from PAU, Ludhiana, adjudicated the entries. Mr Jasjit Singh Randhawa, Horticulture Minister, Punjab, was the chief guest at the seminar while Dr Harbans Lal, Parliamentary Secretary, Punjab, presided over. In the vegetable category, Ludhiana district won the maximum prizes. Dr Harbans Lal gave the overall trophy to Dr Rajinder Singh

According to Dr Harmail Singh, in the potato category, Dr Bhavjit Singh of Sarabha won the first prize whereas in the broccoli and baby corn categories, Namdhari Seeds, Bhaini Sahib, won both first and second prizes. In the flower category, Ludhiana district won 46 prizes. The main prize winners were Nishant Jain, Shasi Jain, DAV Public School, Guru Nanak Public School and Government Landscape Unit, Doraha. |

Samrala, March 17 He said the state government had neither released grant to B.Ed College for the past one year nor had it announced a meaningful policy to adjust teachers rendered surplus after the shifting of plus two classes from colleges. Prof Kuldeep Singh, state committee member, and Dr Khushwinder Kumar, district president, have appealed to the government to release salary to B.Ed colleges and adjust surplus teachers. |

Aurobindo college students awarded
Ludhiana, March 17 Col P.S. Choudhary, General Manager of the college, read out the annual report. Prof Prabhjot Kaur emphasised on the overall development of students along with spiritual development. Prizes were distributed among students for excellence in academics, sports and extra-curricular activities. Nidhi Bhuchar was honoured for standing first in the college in the B.Com (I) university examination held last year. Preetika Goyal of B.Com (I) and Chintan Bansal of B.Com (II) were honoured for standing first in aggregates in the house examinations, respectively. Students who had secured more than 95 per cent in any subject in the university examination were given a cash prize of Rs 1,000 each. Farewell function:

Jaspreet was selected Miss Farewell whereas Manjeet Kaur and Amandeep Kaur were declared the first and second runners-up, respectively. Sonia was adjudged Miss Elegant, and Sarabjeet Kaur was awarded the title of Miss Beautiful Smile. Ms Daisy Aujla, Ms Sonu and Ms Ashoo Toor Gill were the judges. Tiny ‘graduates’
Ludhiana, March 17 The students came onstage and took the oath of allegiance to the school flag. Ms Navjot Kaur, academic coordinator, elementary section, shared with the audience the beautiful moments she and her team spent with the students. Clad in gowns and caps, the children received their scrolls. Children of class III sang "Tum badhe chalo..." The students of class I presented an Arabian gypsy dance, impressing the audience with their lithe and dexterous movements. Ms Suneet Sidhu, Head of the junior wing, presented the vote of thanks. |

135 polio corrective
surgeries performed
Ludhiana, March 17 Mr Parag Jain, DIG of Police, Ludhiana range, and Lala Lajpat Rai, formed member of the Rajya Sabha, were guests of honour at the inaugural function. A team of 16 doctors, led by Dr Adi Narayan Rao, Director-General, Prema Hospitals and Free Polio Corrective Surgery Foundation, Visakhapatnam, conducted the examination of patients and later performed corrective surgical at Swami Vivekanand Hospital. According to the project chairman, Mr Harish Singla, the camp was being funded under a matching grant of the Rotary Club of Terry Pines, San Diego, California (USA,) and the Rotary International, which had provided $ 30,500 for the purpose. The project, he added, had been made possible with the help of Rotarian Philippe Lamoise, District Governor elect of California (USA). Mr Ram Parkash Bharti, president of the trust, said the organisers had made elaborate arrangements for boarding, lodging, meals of patients and their attendants free of cost while the patients would also be given medicines free of cost. Among others, Mr B.D. Arora, secretary of the Swami Vivekanand Swarg Ashram Trust, Mr Kailash Gupta and Mr Parveen Goyal, president and secretary, respectively, of the Rotary Club (Ludhiana central) were also present on the occasion.

Pak beat India 43-37 in kabaddi
Malerkotla, March 17 Mr S.K. Sharma, IGP, was the chief guest. It was inaugurated by Mr Surjit Singh Grewal, SP (D), and presided over by Mr Harinder Singh Chahal, SSP, Sangrur. Dr Indu, SDM, Malerkotla, was the guest of honour. Zaffar Gujjar, a Pakistani raider, who was later adjudged the best player. Pappu of Chakk Chuhar, Manjit of Sehora, Laddi of Mandian, Gora of Dolewal and Seera of Pitho villages of Indian team and Abbas Butt, Sadiq Butt, Taz Gujjar, Amar Ismail and Surjit Bhatt of the Pakistani team were given cash prizes from sports lovers. India has won matches at Maheean Wal and Lohara (Moga) and lost an equal number at Chamkaur Sahib and Sahnewal towns recently. One match ended in a draw at Hansali village. The next matches would be played at Ghardiwal, Patiala and Ballondi villages, the organisers said. Earlier, eves of Sher-e-Punjab Kabaddi Academy, Atta, defeated Bhinder Club, Jagraon. The veterans’ event was won by the district kabaddi team of Ludhiana by defeating Moga district. The winners and runners-up were felicitated with cash prizes worth Rs 75,000 and 50,000, respectively. |
