Smile a while
Jaspal Bhatti

WHAT’S in a smile? So would ask grouchy people who never seem to have a smile on their lips. On closer inspection, they are found to be government servants. The greater an IAS officer’s areas of power and control, the lesser are his chances of smiling. If a bureaucrat has an unusually large smile on his face, don’t be shocked. He’s probably just retired or due to retire on the coming month-end.

And on the other end is our dear ‘netaji’ who just cannot do without a smile. He knows that other than a smile, he has nothing else that can hide his inefficiency.

I’m sure you will agree when I say that I have never seen a policeman smiling. Only when a subordinate creeps up and says, "Sahibji, aap ke ilake mein ek lash mili hai", there is a strange twinkle in the eyes and the signs of a large smile.

One day a man was struck dead by lightning. He died with a smile on his face. Everyone was curious. How could this man die smilingly? One of the relatives confided, "The dead man was actually a actor. When the lightning struck, he thought it was a camera flashing to take his photo!"
