Experts discuss spine problems

Chandigarh, February 19
The 19th Annual Conference of Association of Spine Surgeons of India (ASSICON) 2006 concluded here today. A number of presentations by specialists marked the end of the three -day conference hosted by the Chandigarh Spine Society.

The day started off with guest lectures on spinal infections chaired by Dr Jayaswal and Dr Samir Dalvie. It dealt with important topics like “Complications of TB- Conservative Management” by Dr Abhay Nene ;”Post op Discitis” by Dr Rajgopal “Management of infected spinal implants” by Dr Rajasekaran “How mechanical decompression fails in TB Spine” by Dr S M Tuli.

This was followed by a discussion of experiences of senior orthopaedicians including Dr Boachie from USA, Dr Jayaswal, Dr Kekre and Dr Zaveri, who discussed their professional learning experiences. The conference focussed on complications in spine surgeries while eminent international surgeons like Dr Boachie, Dr Gahr, Dr Heini, discussed their experiences in complicated cases.

The next session was on guest lectures on recent advances in spine surgery, where Dr Jayaswal talked about complications in thoracoscopy, Dr Destandau spoke about the complications of Endoscopic Spine Surgery, Dr Acharya on complications in vertebroplasty and Dr Rajendra Prasad on Problems with surgery for OPLL.

The 19th ASSICON 2006 concluded with a valedictory function. The Organising President, Prof S.S.Gill, Organising Chairman, Prof Raj Bahadur, Organising Secretary, Dr Vijay G.Goni expressed their vote of thanks to faculty and delegates.

Blood donation camp

Panchkula, February 19
The blood donation camp organised jointly by Vishvas Foundation and Shiva Market today got an overwhelming response. Over 154 persons, including a large number of women, donated blood at the camp organised in the Sector 9 market.

Doctors from the Department of Transfusion Medicine, PGI, rendered their services. This is the third time that a blood donation camp has been organised by the Vishwas Foundation.

All rishi kumars and sadhavis also donated blood, including the organiser and general secretary of Vishvas Foundation, Sadhvi Neelima Vishvas. Donors were later given light refreshment. They were also given mementos.

Later, Sadhvi Neelima Vishvas said there was an urgent need for creating an awakening among masses to donate blood and giving someone a gift of life. “The number of accidents is increasing and the supply of blood is diminishing,” she said. She also spoke about other services being rendered by the Vishvas Foundation like free education for needy children, free sewing classes for girls, helping in marrying off poor girls, and contributions for natural calamities.

Prem, Madhuri adjudged best athletes

Mohali, February 19
Prem Pandey (CSE sixth semester) was adjudged the best athlete among boys and Madhuri (CSE second semester) was declared the best athlete among girls in the Ninth annual Athletics meet of Shaheed Udham Singh College of Engineering and technology Tangori, near here, recently.

The meet was inaugurated by Indian Olympian Milkha Singh on February 15. As many as 300 students participated in different track and field events. Milkha Singh in his inaugural speech laid emphasis on will power and hardwork, which according to him are the two main factors in achieving success.

Later, Dr J.S. Dhaliwal, Vice-Chairman of the college, distributed prizes to the winners. The Principal of the College, Dr SS Koonar, highlighted the achievements, rare distinctions, laurels, which this great athlete of India brought to this country.

Boys relay race: Prem Pandey, Saurabh Nayyar, Aditya, Abhishek Dubey — first; Gagandeep, Saurabh Gupta, Mohit Aggarwal, Gautam Singh — second; Depinder, Ashmpreet Singh, Puneet Verma, Harpret Walia — third.

100m race girls: Supinder, (EE) — first; Gavleen (CSE) — second; Neha (CSE) — third. 200m girls: (CSE) — first; Kiran (CSE) second; Avneet (IT) — third. 400m race girls: Ashima (CSE) — first; Poonam (CSE) — second; Shivanjali(CSE) — third. Relay Race Girls: Parneet, Sarabjit, Shavini Neha — first; Ritika ,Ritu, Ruchi and Sarabjit — second; Jyoti, Poonam, Ashima, Gurpreet — third. Annual Sports Day

Little Hearts, the pre-primary wing of Sri Guru Harkrishan Model School, Sector 38, yesterday organised its annual Sports Day ‘Xpressions 2006’ . The chief guest was R. S. Goraya, District Education Officer, UT.A number of track events, a cultural show and a healthy baby contest was part of the function.
