THE Chandigarh Administration has proposed that persons having a criminal record should not be given a liquor vend licence. This means that the administration will now have to find religious, honest and upright persons to run liquor shops. But a person working in a gurdwara, mandir or mosque will never come forward to bid for a liquor contract. Even a common man is likely to shirk from entering into such a business. I have never heard anyone suggesting to someone’s father, "If your son respects moral values so much, why don’t you let him do liquor business?" I think a criminal record should be a prerequisite for the awarding of a liquor contract. If they really decide to blacklist shady persons from the business then they intend to close all wine shops. Most of the liquor barons are either politicians or they support politicians. If a criminal is so well respected in politics, why should he be denied the same respect in liquor business? This business sometimes demands mastery over adulteration, expertise of handling black money and management of unscrupulous staff. This is a different MBA and the administration should appreciate it. |
