Utility of NAAC accreditation stressed

Ludhiana, January 24
The Department of Higher Education, Punjab, organised a one-day seminar to motivate the principals of non-accredited colleges affiliated with Panjab University, Chandigarh, to get their colleges accredited from NAAC.

The seminar was organised under the guidance of DPI Colleges, Ms Nisha Sarad.

Principals of around 37 colleges participated in the seminar. The main objective of the seminar was to make principals of these colleges aware that accreditation from NAAC was a must to ensure regular grants from UGC.

While giving her presidential remarks regarding the need of accreditation, Ms Sarad said the educational institutes should lay stress on quality education instead of results.

She said educational institutions should lay stress on quality education instead of results. The institutions should have an active, ongoing system of self-assessment and self renewal. Educational institutions should provide quality education to enable students to meet requirement o the market.

She added that NAAC assessment was very simple and ensured the quality standards in the college. She explained the system of preparing the Self-Study Report (SSR) and highlighted the benefits of accreditation.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof Tarsem Bahia, former Principal, AS College, Khanna, and a Senate and Syndicate member of Panjab University, said colleges should give more emphasis on quality education.

He favoured remedial teachings, computerisation of libraries, setting up of placement cells and admission tests to improve education.

Others who spoke on the occasion were Mr R.K.Bajaj, former Dean, Colleges, Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla, and Dr S.P. Dhawan, former Deputy, DPI Colleges.

The resource persons, while speaking on the occasion, revealed that for the assessment of a unit, the NAAC followed a three stage process, which was a combination of self-study and peer review.

The stages include the preparation and submission of a self-study report by the unit of assessment, the on-site visit of the peer team for validation and the final decision by the executive committee of NAAC.

Dr D.S.Gill, Principal, SCD Government College, welcomed the delegates and resource persons and other dignitaries.

He said SCD Govt College had got A grade from the NAAC and the college had improved a lot after the accreditation process.

The NAAC committee members of the college, including Prof Sohi, Prof Jai Pal, Prof BM Sarwal, Prof Ashwini Bhalla and Prof Jatinder Mohan, took keen interest in making the seminar a success.

‘Vaapsi’ captures plight of Punjabi youth abroad

Ludhiana, January 24
The Vice-Chancellor of Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) today released a book titled “Vaapsi” by Mr Nirmal Jaura, a teacher at the university’s Communication Centre here today.

Written in Punjabi, the book is a story about a Punjabi youth, who wants to go abroad in search of greener pastures leaving behind their own farms.

Based on a true story of two youths whom Nirmal had met at Birmingham (UK) is a telling saga of the desperation of the Punjabi youths hankering to go abroad and not putting in hard work back home to eke out a living.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Aulakh complemented Nirmal for this effort to send a message across to the youth that they could earn dollars but not satisfaction and even miss out on the warmth of their families.

“This is a timely message to the youth of Punjab who often cajole their parents into raising huge loans to pay to unscrupulous travel agents to go abroad even at the cost of losing their life,” he added.

The book has been published by Baba Bulle Shah Foundation, whose chairman Gurcharan Singh Shingar was also present on the occasion.

Workshop on market access negotiations

Ludhiana, January 23
The Ministry of Commerce and Industry and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) conducted a stakeholder consultation workshop on “Post-Hong Kong Ministerial Consultation on Non-Agricultural Market Access Negotiations (NAMA) and the Indo-Asean FTA Negotiations” here today.

The workshop informed industry participants about the progress made with respect to NAMA negotiations. “The modalities for negotiations in this area will be finalised by April this year. We aim at identifying sensitive products which should not be subject to tariff reductions and identify products and markets in which India may have export interest,” said Deputy Secretary, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Mr Anand Swaroop.

Through the workshop, feedback of the participants on the negatives of products for the Indo-Asean FTA Negotiations was also taken.

Mr Swaroop said the framework agreement on comprehensive economic co-operation between India and Asean, which was signed on October 8, 2003, envisaged a free trade area (FTA) in goods between India and Asean. The government sought to finalise the FTA, which aimed at zero duty imports with Asean by June this year.

NCC camp concludes

Amloh, January 24
On the closing of one week-long camp of NCC unit of Government Secondary School Amloh organized a seminar on AIDS yesterday. The camp was organised by Punjab NCC battalion Nabha. Havildar Chamkaur Singh imparted training to the cadets.

NCC officer Navtejinder Kumar spoke on the importance of NCC to maintain discipline, to provide best soldiers for the country and to safeguard the independence of the country. Qualifying A certificate will be given to the cadets, Mr. Kumar said.

Principal Zora Singh Gill stressed the need to organize AIDS awareness camps in schools and at other public places to save the people from this growing menace. He appreciated the role of NCC in the schools which develop a spirit of social service and discipline among the cadets.

Biology lecturer Sukhdev Singh spoke on the causes of the disease and suggested safeguards. Mr. Avinash Kumar Bansal, Mr. Jaspal Singh DPE and Mr. Ram Saran Sood President PTA also spoke on the occasion.

300 examined at eye camp

Ludhiana, January 24
More than 300 patients were examined by eye specialists and team of doctors at a free medical and eye check-up camp, organised jointly by Shri Vivekanand Swarg Ashram Trust and Rotary Club Ludhiana Central at Swami Vivekanand Hospital here today. The camp was conducted to commemorate the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekanand.

Mr Avtar Singh Makkar, president, SGPC, Mr Sharanjit Singh Dhillon MP and Mr S.P. Sethi, District Governor Rotary International, were present.

A team of doctors, including Dr Manjot Gill, Retina Specialist from Chicago (USA), Dr Varinder Aggarwal, medical specialist from Detroit (USA) and Dr Waheguru Pal Singh, Medical Superintendent, Dr B.L. Kapoor Memorial Hospital examined patients and rendered advice. The trust would provide the facility of free cataract operations to the needy patients, identified during the camp.

Meanwhile, 21 persons donated blood at a blood donation camp organised at Shiv Mandir, Haibowal Kalan yesterday by Shiv Sena (Bal Thackeray) to mark the 80th birthday of the founder president of the party. OC

Sports Centre win by 74 runs

Ludhiana, January 24
Kuldeep Dhami ( 70 n.o) and Harbhajan Kala ( 4 for 29 runs) helped Sports Centre, Ludhiana to record an easy win by 74 runs over FC Sondhi Club of Jalandhar in the opening match of the first Shaheed Ramesh Chanader Memorial Cricket Tournament being organised by the Shaheed Ramesh Chander Memorial Welfare Society at Daresi Ground here today.

Sports Centre won the toss and opted to bat first. In the stipulated 30 overs, they scored 209 runs for the loss of five wickets. The innings revolved around Kuldeep Dhami and Nishu who contributed 77 and 33 runs, respectively. Other notable scorers were Minta (23), Harbhajan Kala (22) and Gaurav (21). For the visitors, Amit Sharma and Ballu chipped in with two wickets each conceding 28 and 32 runs while Rajesh grabbed one wicket for 47 runs. In reply, FC Sondhi Club were bowled out for 135 runs in 24.3 overs. The contributors were Ankur Sondhi, Gaurav and Yogesh who made 47, 38 and 16 runs, respectively. Harbhajan Kala of the Sports Centre was the pick of the bowlers capturing four wickets for 29 runs while Lov Abhlish took two wickets for 19 runs and Soni claimed one for 16.

Earlier, Mr Arvind Chopra inaugurated the tournament in which eight teams are taking part.

Rural sports meet

Punjab Public Works Minister Partap Singh Bajwa today inaugurated the 77th Rural Sports Tournament organised by Dashmesh Sports and Welfare Club at Falewal village, 25 km from here.

Mr. Bajwa announced a grant of Rs 50,000 for the Dashmesh Sports Club of the village. Others present on this occasion included Mr M S Malik, DGP, Haryana, and President Wrestling Federation of India, Mr H S Brar, DSP, and Mr Manmohan Singh, president, Dashmesh Sports and Welfare Club.
