Students to perform ‘Sirmauri nati’ at R-day function

Chandigarh, January 24
As many as 101 students drawn from the city and Panchkula schools will present a special “Sirmauri nati” at the Republic Day celebrations in New Delhi.

The participation will be a special achievement for the 88 students from Navodya schools, 12 students from C.L. Aggarwal DAV School, Sector 7, one from GMS, Sector 32, and 10 students of Bhavan Vidyalaya, Sector 15, Panchkula.

The students were imparted extensive training by artistes of the North Zone Cultural Centre at the Kalagram complex for 50 days.

Appreciating the dedication and hard work put in by the students during the strenuous training, principal Shashi Bannerjee of the Bhavan Vidyalya, Panchkula, and Ms Promila Dhar of C.L. Aggarwal D.A.V Model School, Chandigarh, said the students had done the institutions proud.

The director, NZCC, Mr R.T. Jindal, said these students would feature in a three-minutes performance before the President of India during the Republic day cultural extravaganza.

A contingent of over 200 children was given a warm sendoff by Governor Rodrigues and the Lady Governor at Kalagram, Mr Jindal added.

Admissions to MBA

Candidates have been shortlisted on the basis of CAT-2005 score for admission to MBA, MBA (IB) and MBA (HR) courses for the session 2006-2007 of the University Business School, PU. The result has been put up at the UBS Notice Board, the PU main enquiry and website of UBS (ubschandigarh.org).

Group discussion and personal interview for admission to above MBA courses of the University Business School, PU, will start from February 21.

Separate letters are being sent for group discussion and personal interview to those shortlisted through registered post. Sports category list will be declared in April, according to Prof Satish Kapoor, Chairperson, University Business School, PU.

‘The Khalsa’ screened at SGGSC-26

“The Khalsa”, a film directed by director Mangal Dhillon, was screened as part of the founder’s day celebrations of SGGS College, Chandigarh.

The film was screened to make the youth aware of the tenets of Sikhism based on universal brotherhood.

The students also organised a community kitchen after the bhog of Akhand Path.

The British School, Panchkula, yesterday announced the implementation of “lyceum”, a learning solution which includes educational ERP, a global connected learning community and e-governance. School Director Geetika Sethi said it was an international award winning software developed for the educational sector. A cultural programme was organised on the occasion which included songs, dances, yoga and aerobics.

R-Day celebrations at school

Student and staff of the Sri Hemkunt Public School, Sector 71, here began three-day Republic Day celebrations at the school yesterday. On the first day today, tiny-tots sang patriotic songs and danced to the tunes of “I love my India”.

An inter-house drawing contest, an essay writing competition and a sports competition will be organised in the coming days.

Fellowship for dentist

Mohali, January 24
A local doctor has been awarded fellowship by the International Congress of Oral Implantologist for his efforts in the field of dental implants.

Dr J. Nagaraj, who is heading the Department of Dentistry and Facio-Maxillary Surgery, Shivalik Hospital, here said while addressing a press conference here yesterday that the fellowship was awarded to him last month and he was the first doctor in this region to receive the honour.

Dr Nagaraj, who was carrying out his treatment on an NRI patient, Mr Gurvind Rait, said he could do a full mouth rehabilitation with dental implants and grafting.

Dr Nagaraj, who has been treating NRI and foreign patients, said he could also handle complicated implant cases which required complex bone grafting procedures like lifting sinus, nerve repositioning and grafting from hip bone.

St Anne’s eves reign supreme

St Anne’s School, Sector 32, beat Carmel Convent School, Sector 9, 2-0 in the girls under-19 final of the Chandigarh Sports Department Inter-School Tennis Tournament, which concluded at the Lake Club here today.

Sacred Heart, Sector 26, finished third, beating St Xavier’s Senior Secondary School, Sector 44, 2-1.

In the finals of boys under-19 category, DAV Public School, Sector 8, got the better of DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, 2-1.

St John’s High School, Sector 26, beat Guru Nanak Public School Sector 36 2-0 to secure the third place.

Results: girls under- 19 (final): St Anne’s-32 bt Carmel Convent-9 2-0 (Noor Paul bt Iktesh Chahal 6-0, 6-2; Arshee Khosla bt Karishma Chandana 6-1, 6-2).

For 3rd and 4th places: Sacred Heart-26 bt St Xavier’s Senior Secondary School-44 2-1 (Arpan Chahal bt Stanzin Angria 9-0; Ravnoor Kaur lost to Rajvir Kaur 4-9; Arpan Chahal and Ravnoor Kaur bt Rajvir Kaur and Stanzin Angria 9-1).

Boys under-19 (final): DAV Public School-8 bt DAV Senior Secondary School-8 2-1 (Vijayant Malik bt Chandam Shaolin 6-2, 6-0; Mandeep Yadav lost to Deepinder Singh 3-6, 3-6; Vijayant Malik and Mandeep Yadav bt Chandam Shaolin and Deepinder Singh 7-6, 6-2.

For 3rd and 4th places: St John’s-26 bt Guru Nanak Public School-36 2-0 (Mandeep Singh Gill bt Karanvir Singh 9-1; Gaurav Inder Singh Toor bt Devbir Singh 9-2).

PU beat Garhwal varsity

Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh, beat HNB Garhwal University 3-2 in the quarter finals of the North-East Zone Inter University Tennis (Men) Championship at PU campus here today.

The first single game was won by PU’s Paras Thakur who beat Anuj Kumar 6-1, 6-0 while Gurdit Singh (PU) lost to Pardeep Pant 4-6, 0-6 in the second single.

But in the doubles, the Paras and Gurdit duo got the better of the Pardeep and Anuj 6-1, 6-2.

The other results are Delhi University b Lucknow University 3-0; Allahabad University b Kurukshetra University 3-0; GNDU, Amritsar b AMU, Aligarh, 3-0.

Tomorrow PU and Delhi will meet GNDU, Amritsar, and Allahabad University, respectively in the semi-finals.

Volleyball competition from Jan 28

A two-day Volleyball competition will be organised at a playing ground, near Gopal Mandir, Darwa, here from January 28. The meet is being organised by the Uttranchal Bhratri Sangathan, Darua.

The aspirants may send their entries to the sangathan's office at shop no 425/1, Darua, till January 26.

According to Mr P.D. Devshali, general secretary of the sangathan, said prizes would be given in cash to the winning teams.
