BJP to agitate for more districts in Jammu Jammu, January 17 The plan for the agitation would be given final shape during the next meeting of the executive committee of the party which is to be presided over by Mr Manohar Lal, in charge of the organisation. According to the BJP president, Dr Nirmal Singh, the Congress had promised in its 2002 election manifesto that it would implement the Wazir Committee recommendations. The commitment had also been made in the common minimum programme of the coalition government. But despite the passage of over three years, the ruling coalition had slept over the matter. In reply to a question, Dr Singh said here today that Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad’s announcement that the recommendations needed to be further broadened, “smacked of some political motives.” The BJP chief said under the report three more districts in the Jammu region and one in the Kashmir valley needed to be carved out. He said Mr Azad was contemplating to carve out three new districts each in the valley and in the Jammu region. Dr Singh said on the basis of the area, population and the level of backwardness, which was higher in Jammu than Kashmir, “we demand that more than three districts be created in the Jammu region.” He said, “Our agitation will focus government’s attention towards its failure to set up a new delimitation commission and towards its failure to tackle with the problem of unemployment and corruption”, adding that Mr Azad’s “war” against corruption was “merely a cosmetic exercise”. The BJP leader disclosed that he had invited the new BJP president, Mr Rajnath Singh, to visit the shrine of Mata Vaishnov Devi. However, a formal invitation would be made to the president during the ensuing meeting of the party’s national council. He said about 25 BJP leaders from the state would attend the council meeting because for the first time Mr Rajnath Singh had invited office-bearers of the state units of the party and presidents of various factions of the Sangh Parivar. |
