Optimise healthcare in tricity: Governor
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, January 17
With a view to improving the availability of quality healthcare, the Punjab Governor and UT, Administrator, Gen. (retd.) S.F. Rodrigues, today emphasised the need for optimal utilisation of existing healthcare infrastructure in the tri-cities of Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula, by evolving a suitable strategy and coordinated effort.

“There is a need of adopting a synergistic approach by pooling our resources, harmonious integration of network and manpower. The health profession should be related to social problems of drug-addiction, female foeticide etc for improving the overall quality of life of our people,” he stated.

Accompanied by his wife Ms Jean Rodrigues, they went round the PGI emergency, tele-medicine department, New OPD and inquired about the well being of the patients. The Governor also interacted with the doctors attending to patients.

General Rodrigues held a meeting with the Director PGIMER, Dr. K.K. Talwar, senior faculty heads and discussed plans for bringing about further improvement in the delivery system by revamping the healthcare services in the region.

He felt that the PGI, being an institute of national character, must concentrate on upper level healthcare and research work and the remaining primary and secondary level health operational services sector, should be the responsibility of functional hospitals and community health centers with the support of NGOs and other accredited social health organisations.

This approach, he maintained, would help in reducing the existing workload on the PGI, besides the optimisation of health manpower and infrastructural facilities available in other hospitals. He asked the PGI authorities to prepare a blueprint for furthering this plan, after discussion with other concerned authorities and evolving a consensus on this issue.

The Governor, during his visit to the tele medicine department interacted with the doctors on line in other hospitals. He was impressed by this advanced facility and said that the use of latest means of technological advances acted as an enabling factor in the process of change, bringing efficiency to the system.

Dr K.K. Talwar, Director PGI, while giving a presentation of the available facilities said that this institute not only catered to the health, research and medical education needs of the region but of the whole country.

Dr Talwar said that the super-speciality services and high quality patient care was available at the hospital besides giving efficient emergency services to the referred patients from different states.

During his hour-long stay at PGI, the Governor also visited Nehru Sarai, Hans Raj Sarai and Gurudwara Sarai Management on the campus premises, engaged in providing shelter and food to the attendants of the patients. He appreciated their services and concern for the society and offered help for expanding their endeavours.

During his visit to the telemedicine department, the Governor said that Chandigarh Administration had prepared a plan to link all the 18 villages of Union Territory, Chandigarh through a tele medicine project.

“This will lead to a revolution in the healthcare system and facilities available. We have totally analysed the shortcomings and are making sincere efforts in moving the healthcare system towards clinical transformation,” Gen SF Rodrigues said.

Thakur set to prove his mettle, says coach
Arvind Katyal

Deepak Thakur
Deepak Thakur

Chandigarh, January 17
Twentyfive-year-old Deepak Thakur Sonkhla is among the star attractions in the ongoing Premier Hockey League. This tough Himachali boy is playing for Chandigarh Dynamos. He is one of the most experienced hockey forwards that India has produced.

His guide and mentor Inderjit Singh Gill, a senior hockey coach at the National Institute of Sports (NIS), Patiala, says Deepak is a hard worker.

He is with him ever since he was chosen for the Centre of Excellence Scheme of the Sports Authority of India, he adds.

Last year was not good for Deepak. Moreover, he did not get much chance to prove himself, he adds.

The family hailed from Hoshiarpur district in Punjab which later settled in Una in Himachal Pradesh since his father was a HP Government employee.

Deepak hogged the limelight when he brought home the Junior World Cup title in 2001 in Hobart (Australia). Since then there has been no stopping for him.

But the dirty hockey politics let him down and he was dropped from the Indian team in December.

Deepak is known for his killer instinct. He is a Rajput by caste and comes from a family of sportspersons. His younger sister was also a national badminton player.

Deepak took to hockey when he was just nine. As there was no coach in Una, he tried various options to get training. Finally, in 1993, he was chosen by the SAI.

Once admirer of Dhanraj Pillay, today he himself holds equal respect as him. In the Busan Asian games in 2002, Deepak helped India win silver medal.

Deepak is all set to prove his mettle, maintains Inderjit Singh Gill.
