Another promising cricketer on the block
G.S. Paul
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, January 14
A city lad, Uday Kaul, has made it to the junior Indian cricket team for under-19 World Cup to be held in Sri Lanka next month.

This 15-day event will be held from February 5 to 19 and involves 16 countries with 44 matches to be played at five venues across Colombo.

The preparation camp will start from January 17 at Chennai.

“Everybody is having great expectations from me and I hope to perform well and live up to their expectations. I have been working hard and it is a great opportunity and I will prove my worth,” says Uday.

Born on December 2, 1987, this left-handed batsman and wicketkeeper first hogged the limelight in the under-17 Asian Cup held in Bangalore in 2003.

He scored unbeaten 208 runs and his total score was 411 in the meet. Earlier, he appeared as standby in the Wisden under-19 cricket tournament played at the PCA stadium, Mohali, against Australia last year.

Besides being part of the National Cricket Academy, Bangalore, he also led Punjab team in the North-Zone Cooch Behar Trophy held at Cricket Stadium, Sector 16, recently where his performance could not be ignored.

He was recently included in the Punjab Ranji team, where he got a chance to play with senior players like Dinesh Mongia and Zaheer Abbas.

Uday maintained that he didn’t feel any pressure while playing with senior international players. “On the contrary, it was a great feeling and I enjoyed every minute of it. Punjab team coach Intekhab Alam gave me valuable tips to be mentally tough and taught me how to improve upon my game. Zaheer Khan got me out even after letting me know where he is going to place the ball. I then realised how hard I had to work to play at the international level.”

Playing competitive cricket for the past five years and a great admirer of Sri Lankan cricketer Kumara Sangakarra, Uday has the same rare all-rounder combination of wicketkeeper-batsman, which is a great incentive.

A product of DAV Cricket Academy, which has produced cricketers like Kapil Dev, Ashok Malhotra and Chetan Sharma along with many national-level cricketers, Uday is all praise for his coach Sukhwinder Bawa.

“Bawa Sir has taught me how to be patient and consistent. I have improved on several other aspects, including my work ethics. My accuracy level has also gone up,” he said.

Test star Yuvraj Singh, V.R.V. Singh and national player Gaurav Gupta are some of the protege of coach Sukhwinder Bawa.

Coming from a sports background, Uday’s father, Tej Kaul, a former physio of the Indian team, is currently working as NIS coach at Chandigarh but Uday gives more credit to his mother, Sandhya Kaul, who is a gymnastics coach at the North Region Centre, SAI.

“My father had been posted outside the city most of the time and I have spent most of my time with mother and she has been supportive of me and helped me achieve my goal.”

Nursing home’s licence cancelled
Our Correspondent

Mohali, January 14
The licence of a nursing home running in Morinda was cancelled for violating norms laid down under the PNDT Act by the Ropar Civil Surgeon, Dr Yash Pal Singla.

In a press conference here today, Dr Singla said a raid was conducted by officials of the Health Department yesterday on Dhiman Nursing Home. The team was not satisfied with the working of the nursing home.

The licence was cancelled as neither did the owner have an ultrasound machine for tests nor did he have a qualified person for the job. Temporary services of another person were availed whenever there was need.

He said the owner told him that no doctor had visited his clinic for conducting ultrasound tests for the past one year and he had failed to inform the authorities concerned in this regard.
