DC calls for awareness drive on blood donation

Ludhiana, January 7
Mr Anurag Verma, Deputy Commissioner, exhorted the social and voluntary organisations to launch a continuous awareness campaign regarding the importance of blood donation.

Mr Verma was addressing a well-attended function after inaugurating a blood-donation camp, jointly organised by the Bank of India and the District Red Cross Society, to mark the centenary celebrations of the Bank of India at Model Town here today.

Mr Verma said the District Red Cross Society was making all out efforts to persuade maximum number of people for blood donation and during the calendar year 2005, 36 blood donation camps were organised and 5087 units of blood were collected, including replacement and volunteer donors.

Apart from above, 523 units of blood were also collected for the Thalassemic patients through 4 blood-donation camps conducted by the Dayanand Medical College and Hospital, Ludhiana through Red Cross Society.

The Deputy Commissioner appreciated the efforts of the bank for this noble cause and appealed other institutions to come forward for such social welfare activities. Staff members of the Bank of India and their family members donated 115 units of blood at this camp, which will be used for the benefit of the poor and needy patients through the District Red Cross Blood Bank.

Mr S.K. Jain, Zonal Manager, Bank of India, disclosed that Bank of India, during its centenary year, has planned many activities for the benefit of the poor segment of the society and such activities would be carried out during the full one year up till September.

Mr S.P. Malik, Secretary, District Red Cross Society, was also present on this occasion.
