Johar promises Rs 4 cr for state schools

Ludhiana, January 7
Mr Harnam Dass Johar, Education Minister, said the basic structure of Punjab schools had to be improved and for this Rs 4 crore would be provided.

To raise the level of sports in government schools of the state, Rs 2 crore would be given to schools. Mr Johar was speaking at a function at Government High School in Sherpur Kalan where he granted Rs 4 lakh to the school.

During his visit to Mangat village, Mr Harnam Dass Johar gave a grant of Rs 8 lakh for constructing rooms of Dalip Singh Government Senior Secondary School, Mangat.

Mr Johar further said that keeping in view the importance of IT and computer education in modern life, computer education had been started in 1300 government schools of the state and in the next year another 1300 schools would be roped in for computer education.

He said that in this academic year 1700 nursery schools had started functioning in primary schools to give education to children aged between 3 to 5 years.

To improve the physical health of students, yoga had been started in all the schools of the state. Yoga is the gift of our old traditions and yogic kriyas helped to give excellent health and helps to combat diseases, he said.

He told the teachers that they were like light houses for the students. So besides academics, they should motivate students to have patriotic feelings and learn self-discipline so that these students could become good citizens.

Mr Johar said Sherpur Kalan’s High School would be upgraded to a senior secondary school on priority basis. Mr Nahar Singh Gill, a native of Sherpur Kalan, thanked Mr Johar for giving grant to the school and also assurance of upgrading the school.

Present on the occasion were Mr Yashpal Mehra, District Education Officer, Ms Harvinder Kaur, DEO (E), Mr Bhagwan Singh, Councillor, Mr Jagdish Singh Marwah and Rakesh Bhandari.

Students cautioned against drug addiction

Ludhiana, January 7
A lecture on drug addiction was organised by the Punjabi Department of Government College for Women today. Principal of the college Prabhjot Kaur welcomed Dr Raghuveer Bains. He told the students about various aspects of drug addiction, its causes and preventive measures.

Dr Bains discussed in detail about AIDS, women harassment, prostitution, alcoholism, stress and frustration, etc. Ms Parmjit Kaur conducted the stage. Ms Balbir Bajaj, Ms Sushma Gupta, Dr Sarbjot Kaur, Prof Jaswant Singh, Prof Balbir Kumar and Prof Kuldip Singh were among those who were present.

Extension lecture

An extension lecture was organised by the Department of English at Government College for Women here on Saturday. Dr Barinder Aulakh, an academician and Chairperson, Regional Institute of English, Chandigarh, was the guest resource person. Ms Neha Verma extended a warm welcome to the guest.

The resource person delivered a talk on news reading, especially for the students of functional English. She stressed upon the importance of voice modulation by giving different examples.

Her second talk was on word accent. She acquainted the student with the nuances of English pronunciation. Ms Romil Preet proposed a vote of thanks.

Camp concludes

A 10-day camp concluded at GHG Khalsa College Gurusar Sadhar on Saturday. It was organised under the supervision of programme officers of the NSS unit of the college, Major Singh and Gurmeet Singh Hundal. This camp was attended by 82 boy students and 9 non-students.

Distinguished guest speakers were invited to deliver lectures on various topics. They included Dr Amarpreet Singh Deol, Dr Gurpreet Kaur Sidhu, Mr Gurwinder Singh Moga, Dr Swaranjeet Singh Deol, Prof Bawa Singh, Dr Sushil Kaur and Dr Ruhi Deol.

Gurpurb celebrations

Guru Nanak Khalsa College for Women, Gujarkhan campus, celebrated Gurpurb with fervour on the occasion of Guru Gobind Singh’s birthday on the college premises on Saturday. The function was marked with the beginning of “akhand path” at the new hostel building of the college on January 5. Bhai Sahib Bhai Maninder Singh recited shabads. On this occasion NSS volunteers and youth club organised a camp for the langar preparations.

Ms Manju Chawla, Principal of the college, spoke on the occasion. Prof Gurbir Singh Jama, general secretary of the governing body of the college, thanked the guests and other dignitaries on the occasion.

Appreciation letters for students

Ludhiana, January 7
Shaheed Memorial Sewa Society and Dr Sadhu Singh Hamdard Memorial Education and Service Society will organise a function to honour students by presenting them with Dr Sadhu Singh Hamdard Memorial Yuva Desh Bhagat Appreciation letters on January 9 at RS Model Senior Secondary School.

These students have inculcated the spirit of patriotism in others and have tried to fight social evils. The students would meet some famous personalities.

Lohri celebrated

Jain Public Secondary School organised a variety programme to celebrate New Year and Lohri here today. More than 150 students of classes II and V participated.

Prizes were given by the president of the Managing Committee, Mr Narinder Kumar Jain.

Youth day

Swami Vivekanand Study Circle will celebrate National Youth Day at Government College for Women on January 12, the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekanand. Mr Navjot Singh Sidhu, MP, will be the chief guest.

Role model awards would be presented to selected students of Punjab and Chandigarh.

Raikot students excel in martial arts

Ludhiana, January 7
Students of Sacred Heart Convent School, Raikot, won the top position in the medal tally by clinching seven gold medals, 10 silver and 20 bronze medals at the 3rd North Indian Martial arts Championship held at Nankana Sahib Public School, Samrala.

The event was organised by the Indian Martial Arts Association, Jalandhar. As many as 550 students from 15 schools of Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Delhi participated. The team also won the trophy for maintaining discipline in the tournament. Thirtytwo students of the school have been selected for a black belt training camp to be conducted here in march.

Dhaliwal awards announced

Ludhiana, January 7
Dr Jaswant Neki, former Director of the PGI, will be awarded the Kartar Singh Dhaliwal Memorial Award for best litterateur for 2004 by the Punjabi Sahit Akademi . The award carries a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh, an appreciation letter and a shawl, Dr Surjit Patar, president of the akademi, said here on Thursday.

The other six winners shortlisted for the award are Dr Karnail Singh, Dr Kartar Singh Suri, Tara Singh Chan, Dr G.S. Rial and Kailash Puri. The award would carry a cash component of Rs 21,000, a shawl and an appreciation letter.

The winner of the Nav Pratibha Award is Des Raj Kali.

“The winners were selected in consultation with Mr Surjit Singh Rakha, son of Kartar Singh Dhaliwal, along with the former president of the akademi, Dr S.S. Johal, Prof Pritam Singh, Harchand Singh Dilbar and Dr Gurmeet Singh Sidhu,” Dr Patar said.

“The executive body of the akademi has also decided to hold elections to various posts for 2006-2008. The elections will be held on March 27. Candidates can file their nomination papers till March 12,” akademi general secretary Ravinder Bhattal said. Mr Ranjit Singh has been appointed election officer.

District Bar chief Harish R. Dhanda honoured

Ludhiana, January 7
The District Bar Association (DBA), Ludhiana, organised a joint meeting of the Bench and the Bar to honour the newly elected chairman of the Bar Council, Mr Harish Rai Dhanda.

Mr B.S. Sodhi, Sessions Judge in charge, addressed the gathering and praised Mr Dhanda as well as the other members of the Bar. He assured full cooperation to Mr Dhanda. All judicial officers participated in the meeting.

Mr C. Munjhal, the outgoing chairman of the Bar Council, Punjab and Haryana, appreciated the working of Mr Dhanda and congratulated him.

Mr Mohan Lal Saggar, Additional Advocate-General, and Mr B.B. Singh Sobti, a former Additional Advocate-General, Punjab, also praised and congratulated Mr Dhanda, Mr Saggar said he had got a grant of Rs 50 lakh sanctioned from Chief Minister for the welfare of the members of the Bar.

Mr Dhanda thanked all members of the Bar for supporting him. He announced that a computerised library would be set up by the end of February.

He said efforts would be made for the creation of a High Court Bench in Ludhiana by taking up the matter with the President of India for the welfare of litigants.

He stressed the need for appointing the Notary Public above the age of 60 automatically on the pattern of oath commissioners who are appointed when they complete two years of practice.
