GMHS-42 clinch title

Government Model High School, Sector 42 (Team B) registered a thumping victory (8-0) over Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 35, to clinch the title in the final of the Junior PHL Hockey Tournament in a match played at Hockey Stadium in Sports Complex, Sector 42, here today.

GMHS-42 team, that has been unbeaten in the tournament, gave a fine display of hockey to outclass their rivals in a one-sided affair. Davinder Singh and Impreet Singh of GMHS-42 made the first move in the first and sixth minutes to take the initial lead but it was Sandeep Singh who stole the show and scored three field goals during third, 25th and 37th minutes.

Another player who proved to be tough for GMSSS, Sector 35 team was Harinder who scored a goal in 32nd minute of the games and made no mistake in converting the penalty corner into a goal in the 42nd minute of the match. Davinder of GMHS-42 didn’t let their supporters down when he flicked the ball into the goal post in a penalty corner rebound in the 41st minute of the match and gave lead to his team.

Harinder Singh of GMHS-42 was adjudged the ‘Man of the Tournament’.

Three times Olympian and Padamshree awardee Shri Balbir Singh distributed trophies to winners and runners up besides handing over gift cheques for Rs 11,000 and Rs 5,000 to the teams.

Gurmit hockey tourney begins today

Chandigarh, December 16
As many as 20 teams drawn from various parts of the country are taking part in the SN Vohra’s All-India Gurmit Memorial Hockey Tournament which will begin tomorrow at Sector 42, Hockey stadium, Chandigarh.

This eight-day tournament will have the participation of teams from Punjab and Sind Bank, BPCL, IOC, Namdhari Xi, Central Railway, Western Railway, Northern Railway, RCF, IAF, Signals, EME, CISF, PNB XI, PSEB, COE, Patiala, Canara Bank, Bangalore, DAV Academy, Punjabi University, Patiala, and Ropar Hawks.

The teams have been drawn into four pools. According to Mr Y.P. Vohra, secretary of the Chandigarh Hockey Association, the prize money will be Rs 50,000 while runners-up will get Rs 25,000. The inaugural match will be held at 1.15 pm between the teams Ropar Hawks and Chandigarh Hockey Academy.

BCM college win badminton tourney

The BCM College of Education for Women, Ludhiana, won the Panjab University inter-college Badminton B- Division (Women) Championship beating the GHG Harparkash College of Education for Women, Sidhwan Khurd, by 2-0. The meet was held at PU grounds, here, today.

The results:

Harneet Kaur and Varinder b Japneet and Harpreet Kaur 15-6, 15-6.
