Doctor on emergency duty found absent
Tribune News Service

Mohali, December 12
In his characteristic style, the Kharar MLA, Mr Bir Devinder Singh, today “raided” the ESI hospital in Industrial Area here this evening. The doctor on emergency duty, according to the MLA, was not present in the hospital when he visited the hospital at around 7 pm.

He told mediapersons later that Dr Arvinder Kaur, who was the doctor on emergency duty and was supposed to be in the hospital from 2.30 pm to 8.30 pm, was absent when he arrived there.

The MLA said he had received a call from an industrial worker in this regard in the evening. “I rushed to the hospital and found that the doctor was not on duty. The staff nurse, Ms Asha Sharma, told me that she had been on duty since 7 pm but the doctor was not there.

All other employees of the hospital, including the Class IV staff, the pharmacist and staff nurse, were present,” said the MLA.

Dr Arvinder Kaur arrived at 8.15 pm and told the MLA that she had to rush back home since her child was unwell. She said she had asked another doctor to do her duty.

The MLA informed the Secretary Health, Mr D.S. Guru, who dispatched a team of assistant directors, including Mr Sukhdev Singh and Mr Avtar Singh, to the hospital to take stock of the situation.

“Mohali is an industrial town. Here we cannot afford to show lapse in the emergency medical services that this hospital is supposed to provide to the industrial workers.

What if a major accident takes places in a factory here during night shift? Who would be responsible if the doctor is absent?

It is a crime against humanity to shirk from the work that gives you your bread and butter,” said the MLA.

“I had held a meeting last week in the hospital here in the presence of the Director ESI, Mr Satpal Jagat.

The staff had been told that there were many complaints of absenteeism in the hospital.

The staff was told that absenteeism would not be allowed to continue at any cost. But it seems the doctors are not bothered,” he lamented.
