Behind closed doors
Jaspal Bhatti

Shutting the doors on someone’s face is an excellent way to communicate that he is not welcome. The way the door of a building is opened or closed for someone says a lot.

When your wife takes too long to open the door for you, it will be foolish to resent or feel offended. Gone are the days when a wife used to wait at the door for her husband to return from work. Similarly, if your son moves out of the house shutting the door with a bang, you should understand that he is not happy with his pocket money or your constant nagging.

An architect, designing the office of a political party, on being asked what kind of doors he had planned , said he preferred swinging doors keeping in mind the aya rams and gaya rams.

A door can also tell the political position of a leader in the party. When Udhav Thackeray said the doors of Matoshree were always open for Raj Thackeray, he meant that the Shiv Sena couldn’t ignore Raj. The doors of the BJP are open for Uma Bharti but only outwardly. She is used to leaving the party meetings in a huff. I asked a peon in the secretariat, “What do you think is the idea behind closed-door meetings? Is it to keep the air-conditioning proper?” He said, “No, they keep the doors shut to ensure that their indecisions are not leaked out.”
