Harmanpreet wins contest

Ludhiana, December 6
The Ludhiana Sahodaya Complex Inter-Schools English Declamation contest was conducted at Green Land Senior Secondary School here today. Thirty-four participants, comprising 17 schools, affiliated to the CBSE, participated.

Harmanpreet Singh from Guru Nanak Public School got the first position, while the second and third positions were secured by Anish Bhatia of Kundan Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School and Amrit Singh of the host school, respectively. Neha Arora of BCM Arya Model School got the consolation prize. KVM School won the overall trophy.

Prof R. Gupta of Khalsa College, Sidhwan Khurd, and Ms Rashmi Grover, English lecturer, Government College for Women, Ludhiana, were the judges.

Mr Tarsem Mangal, Judicial Magistrate, Ludhiana, and Mr Rajesh Rudra, chairman, Green Land School, gave away prizes.

Outgoing Bar president honoured

The Organisation of Young Lawyers(OYL) today honoured the outgoing president of the District Bar Association, Mr Balwinder Goel, and its team for the hard work done by them for the welfare of the legal fraternity. In a farewell party held at the Bar room in the Judicial Complex.

The OYL claimed that during the tenure of Mr Goel the bar association achieved new heights in all spheres due to his sincere and strenuous efforts in past two years. The new entrants to the legal profession were also given warm welcome on the occasion. Senior lawyer Sukhpat Rai Wadehra was the chief guest on the occasion.

Mr Goel thanked the members of the Bar for extending full cooperation to him and his team.

He said with the support of lawyers he was able to get the grant of Rs 1.30 crore from the government, which was utilised in installing elevators, a generator set in the Lawyers Chambers Complex, making the library fully computerised and in launching website of the association.

Mr Goel claimed that the association was the first Bar association to launch its own website and provide fully computerised library to its members. Organising the path of Sri Guru Granth Sahib and the Ramayana for two years was a wonderful experience, added Mr Goel. He assured that the construction work of above 200 chambers would start soon and the Consumer Forum would also be shifted to the Judicial Complex.

The office-bearers of the OYL, Mr Sandeep Kapoor, Mr Rohit Thapar, Mr Malwindr Ghumman, Mr Bir Inder Singh Sekhon, Mr Wazir Singh, Ms Rupila Mohini also honoured the secretary of the association, Mr Rana Harjasdeep Singh, and all other outgoing office-bearers of the Bar association.

The former Bar president, Mr K.R. Sikri, and former Chairman of the PPCC Legal Cell, Mr P.D. Sharma, were also present on the occasion.
