Rotary Club holds 4-day eye camp

Chandigarh, December 4
A team led by Mr Graen Waters, the High Commi-ssioner of New Zealand in India, visited the Rotary Mega Eye Operation Camp at Mauli Jagran, here today. Organised by the Rotary Club of Chandigarh Mid- Town in collaboration with the UT Health Department from December 3, the camp will conclude on December 6.

The team included top Rotarians of New Zealand, Babra Williams, Colin Alford and Jaen Phipps and were full of praise for the working being carried out by Chandigarh Mid Town.

The Director, Health Services, Dr Inderjeet Kaur Walia, motivated the community to avail themselves of the facility. The President of the club, Mr R.K. Goyal, stated that a team led by Dr Bakshi Gupta examined 526 patients at four centres of civil dispensary, Mauli Jagran, Poly Clinic, Sector 22 and 45 and General Hospital, Sector 16.

Of the total students examined, 80 patients were identified for cataract surgery. The Rotary Club is supporting this mega camp by providing free medicines, intra-ocular lenses, food and transportation for patients who will be operated upon at GH-16.

Fellowship for Dr Raj Bahadur

Professor and Head, Department of Orthopaedics, Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, Dr Raj Bahadur, has been awarded the Fellowship of the National Academy of Medical Sciences (India) (FAMS).

The National Academy of Medical Sciences is one of the top academic bodies of the country in medical sciences and the election of a fellow is made on the basis of his academic achievement.

He has a number of achievements to his credit which include the “Excellent Surgeon Award”, “Young Achiever Award by CII” and ‘Best Paper Award’. He has 67 scientific papers in national and international journals to his credit.

Amit clinches a double

Amit Manga from Delhi clinched a double in The Fort Ramgarh Wheelchair Total Tennis’ Championship, which concluded today. In the singles, Amit Manga defeated Raajesh Ranal 6-3, 6-2, while in the doubles, Amit partnered veteran Pradeep Lal, an international wheelchair tennis player to defeat Jagdish Meena and Raajesh Ranal 8-1.

Mr N.S. Kang, Secretary to the Governor, Punjab, gave away prizes to the winners and mementoes to all participants. Mr Satish Chandra, IAS, presided over the function.

Mr Kang showed special interest in the wheelchair tennis and thanked The Fort Foundation and Total Tennis Academy for organising such a tournament.

Pradeep Lal, veteran wheelchair tennis player, appreciated the gesture of organisers for inviting them to participate in the championship.

Amitabh Singh Chandel, Chairman, Total Tennis Academies, said that this would be made a regular feature in the total tennis calendar.

Farheen, Gagandeep bag titles in carrom tourney

Farheen and Gagandeep Singh bagged the Carrom title in the women and men’s category in the 8th Raj Kumar Babuta Memorial Prize Money Carrom Ranking Tournament played at the St Stephen’s School, Sector 45, here.

Farheen upset topseed Sushila Prasad by 23-12, 14-19, 24-10 in a closely contested final and became the new champion in the women’s category while Gagandeep defeated Raj Kumar in straight games at 25-20, 25-09. Third position went to Kumari Kiran who defeated Chahat by 25-0, 25-0 in the women’s category . Anuj Kumar Sinha secured the third rank by defeating Mazhar Khan in the men’s category.

The tournament was organised by the Chandigarh Carrom Association which was sponsored by Mr S.P. Babuta and Mr Rakesh Babuta in the memory of their late father. The cash awards were also given to the winners. These are, Men’s single-winner Rs 3,000, women’s single winner Rs 2,000, Ist Runner up men- Rs 2,000 women- Rs 1,500 2nd runner up men-Rs 1,500 women- Rs 1,000.

Semi finals: women: Sushila Prasad b Chahat 25-15,25-00; Farheen b Kumari Kiran 25-10,25-04.

Men: Raj Kumar b Anuj Kumar Sinha 25-04,25-17, Gagandeep b Mazhar Khan 25-21, 25-06.

The two day meet was organised by the District Panchkula Roller Skating Association. Virender Dahiya, SDM, Panchkula, was the chief guest and gave away the prizes.

Kho Kho championship

The Chandigarh Welfare Club (men) won the Chandigarh Senior State Kho Kho Championship beating the Khalsa Club by 16-14 at Government Model High School, Sector 43 here on Sunday. In women section finals, the Guru Gobind Singh College Club-26 (Women) beat Coaching Centre-23 by 9-2. Chandigarh Kho Kho Association President Harjit Singh gave away the prizes to the winners.

Weightlifting

Naveen Jyoti from WCC, Sector 42, bagged gold medal in + 77 kg class and smashed three state records in snatch from 50-85 kg category, clean and jerk from 67.5-102.5 kg and in total from 117.5 kg to 187.5 kg during the 3rd sub-junior (Boys) Chandigarh weightlifting championship which concluded at Sector 42 Weight lifting Coaching Centre, here, on Sunday.

Pooja best athlete

Chandigarh, December 4
Pooja of MCM DAV College for Women, Sector 36, who scored 37 points, was declared the best athlete while Mohkam Singh of Government College, Muktsar, who scored 13 points, was adjudged best athlete in men’s category during the Panjab University annual inter-college athletics meet, which concluded at PU grounds here today.

MCM DAV College for Women, Chandigarh, bagged the overall championship title in women’s category scoring 55 points. Guru Nanak Girls College, Ludhiana, were placed second with 31 points while SGGS College for Women, Chandigarh, were third with 30 points.

DAV College, Chandigarh, won the overall championship title in men’s category with 86 points. The second place went to SGGS College, Sector 26, Chandigarh, who scored 31 points. GHG Khalsa College, Gurusar Sudhar came third with 18 points. TNS

Vivek school sports meet

Chandigarh, December 4
Vivek High School, Sector 38, on Friday held its annual athletic and sports meet on the school campus. The colourful giddha and bhangra entertained the audience. Gaurav Mahajan was adjudged the best athlete in group A in the under-18 category as he won three gold and two silver medals in the boys category. Inayat Khosla won four gold, three silver and one bronze medal. Group B had Saransh Chopra winning gold and one silver medal while Gurleen Kaur clinched two gold medals.

Group C had Jaskeerat Singh winning two gold and one silver while Pamella Dhillon bagged four gold and two silver medals.

Parminder leads Sigma XI to victory

Panchkula, December 4
An all-round performance by Parminder (69 runs and 2 wickets for 17) enabled Sigma XI to beat Quark XI by 73 runs in the final match of the sixth Cry Cadence Corporate Cricket Challenge being played at Tau Devi Lal Cricket stadium here today.

Parminder was declared the man of the match.

Batting first, Sigma XI scored 200 runs in 34.5 overs. In reply Quark XI was wrapped up at 127 in 23.2 overs.

Brief score: Sigma XI: 200 all out (Parminder 69, Hemraj 25, Balinder 24, Vibhu 3 for 31).

Quark XI: 127 all out (Dhiman 53, Tej Gobind 18, Sanjay 3 for 15, Gurpreet 3 for 23).
