Day of fun for tiny tots
Chandigarh, December 4 Dressed in vibrant colourful clothes, tiny tots participated in a baby show organised for children from Chandigarh and surrounding areas. The cultural programme included presentation of rhymes, shabad, ghazals, songs and dances by the toddlers. A parliament scene was also enacted by the children. The participants were divided into four categories based on their age group and were assessed on two parameters: medical and personality. A team of doctors evaluated the contestants and their speaking ability, etiquette, perception, organisation and reasoning skills were assessed by child educators. In category A, the first prize was awarded to Nikki, while in Category B, the first prize was bagged by Gurnoor. Bhavya won the first prize in Category C and Ananya in Category D. All participants were also given gifts. Alumni meet The alumni meet of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Sector 25, was celebrated with zeal and enthusiasm on Sunday. At least 100 old students of the school were present. The alumni were felicitated and were presented handmade greeting cards and flowers. The old students participated in a number of competitions and a number of cultural events were held. They visited the hostels and shared their past experiences. Wokshop held To encourage the all-round development of students through extra-curricular activities, an art and craft
workshop was organised by Ashiana Public School on Sunday. It was aimed at acquainting the children and their parents with different art forms so that the parents could help children build their creativity levels. During the workshop, the children were taught rag painting, stencil, thread, finger, block vegetable, potato, collage, leaf printing and wax painting. Annual meet The annual sports and cultural meet of Guru Harkrishan Public School, Sector 40, was organised on Sunday. The chanting of the school shabad marked the commencement of the programme, which was followed by marchpast and salute to the chief guest. The tiny tots presented Konkani dance, dandiya, bhangra, rainbow dance and aerobic dance. A number of fun races and sports events were also held. |
Two-day national seminar held
Chandigarh, December 4 Issues pertaining to women empowerment, ensuring availability of drinking water to the masses, improved methods of irrigation, improved methods of sustainable agriculture, identification of information and communication skills sets in present scenario and ensuring adequate availability of infrastructure were discussed during the seminar. Collective self-confidence and collective decision-making were recommended at the seminar. The seminar concluded with the valedictory address of Dr Anuj Sinha, Advisor, Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, Ministry of Science and Technology, New Delhi. In his valedictory address, Dr Sinha suggested to adapt to the fast changing emerging realities. He also emphasised on utilisation of latent potential of Indian women particularly in the field of science and engineering. He laid emphasis on government support to NGOs with scientific temper. Dr Sinha suggested a balanced approach to tackle the problem of empowerment both for urban and rural poor. With a view to encouraging the young researchers, the institute rewarded the three best paper presenters. The first, second and third best paper awards were presented to Ms Anjali Saini and Ms Mandeep Inder Kaur from Punjabi University, Patiala; Ms Gurinder Jit Kaur and Dr U.N. Roy from Punjab Engineering College and NITTTR, Chandigarh, respectively and Ms Neeru Kadiyan and Dr Santosh Satya from IIT, Delhi, respectively. The institute also presented the three best exhibitors’ awards. The first, second and third best exhibitor awards were given to the Government Institute of Textile and Knitting Technology, Ludhiana, Vaish Technical Institute, Rohtak, and Ambuja Cement Foundation. |
Seminar dwells on life in cities
Chandigarh, December 4 Prof S.S. Bari, Registrar of Panjab University, who was the chief guest, spoke about the AIDS epidemic. Prof Rajesh Gill from the Department of Sociology, Panjab University, said the whole history could be understood in terms of the movement from villages to cities. She was of the opinion that the cities of the future must be conceptualised according to regional and local needs and not global needs. Fifteen faculty members and 10 students of various city colleges presented papers, short stories and recited poems on the given themes. Three papers by the faculty members and two papers by the students were selected for presentation at the Katha International Utsav to be held in New Delhi from January 6 to 11 next year. While the first position was bagged by Ms Harneet Kaur of Guru Gobind Singh College for Women, Sector 26, the second position went to Ms Iqbal Judge of Government College for Women, Sector 42. Ms Sukhpreet of the MCM DAV College, Sector 36, was awarded the third prize. |

Engineering college celebrates 1st alumni meet
Dera Bassi, December 4 Former students were invited from all over the country. The college chairman, Mr Avtar Singh, welcomed the former students. He said the aim of the meet was to foster interaction among the students. The programme, which was anchored by Prof Gurpreet Kaur, was attended by over 100 old students of B.Tech. A cultural programme was organised in which old students and faculty participated. Ms Ravneet and Mr Gurvinder Brar of 2000-2004 batch were selected as the best dressed boy and girl. The office-bearers of the association were also elected. Ms Kanwaljeet Kaur, Director of SSIET, distributed the prizes to the winners. Principal Dr I.P. Singh appreciated the former students for attending the meet. |
Radio jockey interacts with
students
Chandigarh, December 4 Speaking to the students, he informed them that this is the best time to get into the career of radio jockeying. He, however, insisted that proper training was a must for anybody wanting to enter the field. “Only proper trained RJ’s will survive in this competitive field in the long run,” he stated. Elaborating on the government’s plan of setting up of more than 330 private radio stations in 91 cities, Sachin added that this was a relatively new career and thus the scope is “unlimited” in the field. |
Painting contest for deaf, dumb
Chandigarh, December 4 The principal Mr Kuldeep Kumar and their trainer Mr Pawan Kumar were also present on the occasion. The attraction of the function was the dance performed by these students. The winners for the painting competition were: 1: Davinderpal Singh; II: Surinder Kaur; III: Sukhwinder Singh. Speaking on the occasion Dr Zora Singh, chairman, Desh Bhagat Group said the institute organised such functions for the overall development of students. |

Rally held to mark World AIDS Day
Mohali, December 4 During the rally the students visited houses at Landran village. They spoke to people and gave them information about AIDS. The students acquainted them with the causes of AIDS, its symptoms and measures to be taken for avoiding this incurable disease. |
Remand for erring cop
Panchkula, December 4 Sushil Kumar was produced before the court of the Duty Magistrate, Mr Ajay Aggarwal, today and sent to one day in police custody. It may be noted that the accused was posted in-charge of the Maddanwala police post at Pinjore. He was caught by the DGP Flying Squad, while accepting a bribe of Rs 5000. ASI Sushil Kumar had allegedly demanded the bribe from Gurcharan Singh, a resident of Khuwala village in Pinjore subdivision. The bribe was allegedly demanded as a ‘token of appreciation’ for affecting a compromise between Gurcharan Singh and Sanjeev Kumar, who were involved in a land dispute. |
