Jammu, November 29
More than 1,500 vehicles were stranded on both sides of the Jawahar tunnel on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway because of heavy snowfall today.

Over one foot of snow has accumulated on the highway between the tunnel and Qazigund.

It had been snowing in the area for the past two days and the highway got blocked this morning resulting in suspension of movement of vehicular traffic.

Reports said there were traffic jams at several places between Ramban and Banihal on the Jammu side and also beyond Qazigund in the valley.

Men of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) were trying to reopen the road and one-way traffic from the Srinagar side will be cleared first when the snow is cleared this evening.

Rehabilitation of the earthquake victims in Uri and Tangdhar has also got disrupted due to the snow that has considerably dipped the temperature. About 3-ft of snow has been recorded in the Tangdhar area.

Reports said a number of earthquake survivors were suffering because of the intense cold.

The Srinagar-Leh highway has also closed due to the snowfall. The Ski slopes in the tourist resort of Gulmarg are buried under a thick sheet of snow.

The Jammu region has also witnessed a sharp decline in temperature.
