Vitalise blood donation movement: Rodrigues

Gen S.F. Rodrigues (retd), Governor of Punjab and the UT Administrator, today called upon blood banks to vitalise the movement by mobilising more blood donors and to ensure the effective use of blood by separating it into various components, for meeting the requirements of more patients.

Interacting with members of the Blood Bank Society and philanthropists, after inaugurating a Blood Donation Camp organised by the Fun Republic on the occasion of its second anniversary, General Rodrigues emphasised that there is an urgent need to propagate this concept of blood separation into components and educating the doctors to adopt this Blood Component Therapy .

General Rodrigues also launched an Art gallery – Chitralaya. An exhibition and paintings “ Reflection – Colours of Life”, by budding artist, Smiriti Agnihotri. The paintings were displayed aesthetically.

General Rodrigues also interacted with kids from slums who had come for a special show of ‘Hanuman’.

Mr Rajan Kashyap, Punjab State Chief Information Commissioner and a strong protagonist of the blood donation movement, while giving a brief on the blood donation camp told the Governor that the Chandigarh Blood Bank Society had taken various steps to generate awareness among the people and also giving full infrastructural and technical support to the blood banks in the region.

PSEB team win badminton tourney

Panchkula, November 28
Mohammad Saleem representing the PSEB kept his supremacy when he walked away with a double crown in the men singles and double section in the 32nd All-India Electricity Boards Badminton Tournament which came to a close this evening at the Sector 3 Sports Complex. The four-day meet was organised the Haryana Power Sports Group

Left-handed Saleem played a cool game to beat his colleague and former world veteran’s badminton champion, Ram Lakhan, in straight games.

HVPN player Virinder Mehta, a former Chandigarh champion was honoured as the most consistent Haryana State Electricity Board player by the chief guest.

Haryana Minister for Transport Randeep Singh Surjewala distributed the prizes. Mr V.S. Kundu, Director, Sports, was the guest of honour.

Later, Saleem combined with Navdeep Singh to defeat Sahil Arora and Sandeep Kumar in the men’s doubles final.

Navdeep’s overhead smashes were a scare for his opponents. Navdeep and Salim won the first game 15-3 without facing any opposition. However, Sahil Arora and Sandeep Kumar displayed their best form in the second game which they won 15-3. With Salim and Navdeep failing to coordinate, Sahil and Sandeep raced to a 6-0 lead.

Bombay Reliance pair of Raghav and Vijay Nair finished third in the doubles competitions while Haryana pair of Surinder and Varinder getting the fourth place.

P.N. Subramani of the Madhya Pradesh State Electricity Board downed Santosh More of Maharashtra 15-8, 15-3 to gain the third place.

Punjab golfers clinch title

The Punjab team clinched the Punj-aab Cup defeating their Pakistani Punjab team at the completion of the three-day competition that concluded at the Chandigarh Golf Club yesterday.

Harjinder Kang, Jaskirat Dullet, Balpreet Ghuman and Harjinder Mattoo steered the Punjab team to victory in a competition that had a nail-biting finish.

Hailing the event as a boost to bilateral relations Maj-Gen Zafar Abbas, President of the Punjab Golf Association, Pakistan, was all praise for the Punjab Golf Association team led by Mr S.K. Sharma. He hoped the buck would not stop here and said it should be converted into an annual feature between the two associations.

The two sides signed an MoU cementing the spirit of golf between the two countries.

YPS student wins bronze in shooting

Chandigarh, November 28
Akanksha, a Class VIII student of Yadavindra Public school, Mohali, has done her school proud by wnning bronze in the just concluded XVth AlI-India GV Mavlankar Shooting Championship held in Kerala. Akanksha shot 330/400 in the sub-junior category in the air pistol event. Prior to that, Akanksha had won gold in the First Chandigarh Games held in October this year.

Akanksha, daughter of former Himachal badminton champion Saroj had earlier taken to badminton. But it was shooting that attracted her. She used to practice with a borrowed pistol.

Her coach, Daleep Singh Chandel, is of the view that if Akanksha continues to get exposure in various meets, she can be a force to reckon with.

She practices for more than four hours daily at the Sector 25 Shooting Range.

St Joseph’s, Mount Carmel win championship

St Joseph’s School, Sector 44, and Mount Carmel School, Sector 47, (team A) won under girls and boys category, respectively, during the first Chandigarh Sub-Junior State Sepak Takraw Championship held at Shishu Niketan Senior Secondary School, Sector 22, here, today.

Mutup Jagmeet of St Joseph and Parveen of Shishu Niketan school, were adjudged the best players of the championship, under boys and girls category, respectively.

Results:

Girls (final): St Joseph’s -44 bt Shishu Niketan -22 by 21-10, 21-7.

For 3 rd place: GSSS-47 (A) bt Mount Carmel-47 by 21-16, 21-17

Boys (final): Mount Carmel-47 bt Mount Carmel-47 by 21-18, 21-17

For 3 rd place: GMSSS-19 bt Shishu Niketan-22 by 21-16, 12-21, 15-7.

Garry selected as ball boy for Grand Slam

Garry Singh Amor of Chandigarh was among six ball kids selected for the Asia/Pacific Grand Slam Australian Open 2006. Trials to select the ball kids were conducted at RK Khanna Tennis Stadium, New Delhi. More than 270 children attended the open trials which concluded today.

Three boys and three girls were selected.

Garry a Class VII student of St John’s School, Sector 26, said he was excited to be selected. Prior to the selection, he was confident as he had done pretty well in all sessions, especially running and rolling of the balls in his group. He got guidance from his father, an International Tennis Federation coach currently in Fiji.
