‘Inattentive’ children need counselling Ludhiana, November 27 According to Dr Paramjit Singh Khurana, Consultant Neuro-Psychiatrist and Drug De-Addiction Specialist at Guru Teg Bahadur Charitable Hospital here, even though children with ADHD want to be good students, the impulsive behaviour and difficulty in focusing in class frequently interferes, thereby causing problems. The teachers, parents and classmates of such children know that the particular child is somewhat different and misbehaving, but they may not be able to exactly pinpoint the problem. “At one time or the other, many children appear inattentive, distracted, impulsive or hyperactive, but those with ADHD show these symptoms and behaviour more frequently and severely than other children of the same age. Studies conducted on this subject have revealed that 3 to 5 percent of school-going children face this behavioural problem which normally occurs before the age of 7 years and can continue into adulthood. ADHD runs in families with about 25 percent of biological parents also having this medical condition.” Dr Khurana said children with ADHD might present themselves with symptoms of being inattentive, making careless mistakes, easily distracted, frequently losing school books and exercise books, careless with class work and home work, impatience, trouble following multiple adult commands, fidgeting or squirming, talkative while working or playing, running about and climbing excessively and interrupting or intruding on others. He suggested that children showing ADHD symptoms should have a comprehensive evaluation to ascertain whether they have other psychiatric disorders of conduct, anxiety, depression or manic depression. Without proper counselling and treatment, such children might fall behind in studies and their relationship with friends. Untreated children had been experiencing more failure than success while at the same time facing criticism from teachers and the family, who failed to recognise this medical condition, he said. |
Bid to bridge Indo-Pak divide at mushaira Ludhiana, November 27 They awaited to listen to the magnetic voice of Gulzar. The wait was worth it as they were also treated to the pun of Dr Rahat Indori. Rahat’s satire on politicians and brilliant presentation kept the audience spellbound. He was the only poet who was called in for an encore rendition of his poems and couplets. From romance to politics, he spoke about everything. His couplets appealed everybody, young and old alike. “Kisnay dastak di yeh dil par kaun hai, aap to anddar hai, baahar kaun hai... jab tak hamaray haath mein aapke haath rahay, chand, suraj, sitaray hamaray saath rahay...” Pun was reserved for those who made people fight in the name of religion and politics. He was at his best while commenting on the Indo-Pak relationship and the US influence over it. “Khauf bikhra hai dono simato mein, teesri simmat ka dabao hai kya... sarhadon par tanaav hai kya, kuchh pata to karo chunao hai kya...” And Gulzar’s recital went beyond the borders. He was too nostalgic about the land he was born in. “Tumhay aziz hai apna watan mein jaanta hoon, mujay bhi ussay mohabbat hai tum yakeen karo, ki zara sa hai farak tum agar samajh sako, tum wahi kay ho au me wanha say hoon...” Bushra Rehman, a leading poet, writer and member of the Pakistan National Assembly, also tried to build the bridges with her poetry. “Ab had say badi jati ha halaat ki talakhi, iss zahar mein kuchh shahad kyoon nahi dete...” Referring to the belated improved relations between India and Pakistan, she remarked: “Izhare mohabbat mein badi der laga di, ik roz mujay aakay batta kyoon nahi dete...” The mushaira was wound up by O.P. Munjal in his own poetic style dedicating one couplet to each of the participating poets. The occasion was Indo-Pak mushaira organised in the memory of Urdu poet Sahir Ludhianvi organised by the Adeeb International. Poets and speakers lauded the efforts of Dr Kewal Dheer for keeping up the tradition of organising the mushaira. Earlier, Punjab Vidhan Sabha Speaker Dr Kewal Kishen presented Sahir awards to Gulzar, Sharmila Tagore and Prof Gopi Chand Narang, chairman of the Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi. The Adeeb awards were presented to Dr Rahat Indori and Trannum Riyaz from Pakistan. |
