Nobel Laureate hopeful of AIDS vaccine
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, November 27
“We can only hope for AIDS vaccine but the developments are not very good yet,” said Nobel Laureate Rolf M. Zinkernagel at the 32nd Annual Conference of the Indian Immunology Society at the PGI.

Keeping his date with Chandigarh this Sunday, Professor Zinkernagel said while artificial vaccines against acute cytopatic infections (like polio virus or small pox) induced protective antibodies and therefore, were successful, we had not been successful in imitating infection-immunity that maintained activated effector T cell responses that would be necessary against HIV, herpes viruses and tuberculosis.

The Nobel Laureate was earlier quoted as saying in The Strait Times that there would never be a perfect AIDS vaccine and unlike diseases such as smallpox, the HIV virus would probably never be wiped out though the AIDS virus could mutate into a less deadly form in the future to ensure its own survival.

Talking to a media gathering, Professor Zinkernagel said one could take similar preventive measures adopted to decrease the incidence of tuberculosis, for HIV AIDS as well. These, he added, include improved hygiene, nutrition and safe sex among others. The Nobel Laureate said completely successful vaccines were the ones available for classical acute childhood diseases while the challenging diseases which evaded the first-level responses still needed to be addressed. Professor Zinkernagel also said that despite major breakthroughs made in the said field, yet a number of issues concerning the body mechanisms still needed to be understood.

A Professor at the Institute of Experimental Immunology, University Hospital Zurich, Professor Zinkernagel was awarded the Nobel Prize along with Peter C. Doherty for their research work on how the immune system recognizes the virus infected cells. According to the study conducted by the duo, white blood cells or lymphocytes must recognise both the virus and certain self molecule to kill the virus infected cells. The Nobel Laureate was accompanied by his wife Kathrin and will also attend the Ranbaxy Research Award in New Delhi.

Conference on immunology
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, November 27
The second day of the 32nd Annual Conference of the Indian Immunology Society held at the PGI yesterday saw the guest lecture on stem cells delivered by Dr M.G. Deo, Vice-President, Moving Academy of Medicine and Biomedicine, Pune.

Dr Deo highlighted the unique capacity of stem cells, the ‘master cells’ to differentiate into many tissue specific cells. He stressed that this capacity could have far-reaching implications in the treatment of diseases like parkinson’s, alzheimer’s, diabetes and myocardial infaction.

Dr Deo said many deficiencies could be overcome with the use of highly proliferative and suitably differentiated embryonic stem cells. The major challenge was to maintain embryonic stem cells in undifferentiated state. Problems were also faced in their use due to tumourigenic potentials and immune rejection by the host, said Dr Deo.

Meanwhile, the afternoon session focused on tuberculosis which is responsible for almost a million deaths in India and also kala azar, which is still rampant in certain regions of India. Dr Abu Mustafa from Kuwait, Prof G.K. Khullar, PGI, and Dr Salotra, ICMR, deliberated on the potential mechanisms for development of vaccines against the dreaded infections.

Our Correspondent

Chandigarh, November 27
Swami Nityananda Giri, a disciple of Sri Sri Paramahansa Yogananda, delivered a talk on kriya yoga at English Auditorium of Panjab University here yesterday.

He dwelt on the benefits of the kriya yoga for a common man.

The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof K.N. Pathak, was the chief guest.

In his autobiography, “Autobiography of a Yogi”, Yoganandaji gives a detailed account of the science of kriya yoga, an evolution-hastening technique.

It is a technique in which a person can direct his life energy up and down the spinal chord. Half a minute of this results in one year of natural spiritual unfoldment in man. In just three years, advanced yogis can accomplish the same result through kriya yoga that nature brings to pass in a million years, he says.
