Girl next door

Bhumika Chawla wants to essay roles that are unconventional. V. Ananth talks to her about her forthcoming films

She looks as fresh as she did when she breezed in with her maiden venture Tere Naam opposite Salman Khan two years ago. Since then three more films starring Bhumika Chawla have been released—Run, Dil Jise Apna Kahe and Silsilay. On the eve of the release of her fourth film Dil Jo Bhi Kahe, Bhumika Chawla confesses that she wants to essay roles, which are different from the rut.

"I play the role of a doctor, Gayatri Pandey, based in Mauritius, in Dil Jo Bhi Kahe. Gayatri is a simple and intelligent girl who believes in positive thinking. I could identify with the role since it was narrated very well, with an emphasis on human emotions," says Bhumika.

"The subject was written in a realistic way and yet it is a part of what is referred to as commercial cinema. The film offered me an opportunity to work with Amitabh Bachchan."

Bhumika confesses that she had not seen the French serial C’est La Vie on which Dil Jo Bhi Kahe is based.

On her being hailed as yet another Bhagyashree or the girl next door, she says, "Every man wants to take home a girl who is nice and simple. It is basic human nature and you just cannot change it. A man may flirt with a sexy babe but when it comes to having a life partner, he will go in for a simple girl."

Among the films in which she is acting at present are Feroz Khan’s Mahatma Versus Gandhi. In this film, she has been cast opposite Akshaye Khanna. In Rajkumar Santoshi’s Family, she has been teamed with Akshay Kumar and Amitabh Bachchan. In Anees Bazmee’s Benaam, she is co-acting with Ajay Devgan and Sameera Reddy. She is also working in a Telugu film Jai Chiranjeeva opposite Chiranjeevi. — MF
