Confetti
Prattlers
S. Nihal Singh
Why
do minders
of displayed art
prattle on and on
and on?
They open the doors
to talk to comrades,
rendering air-conditioning
non-existent.
‘Their voices echo in
galleries that are
poor cousins
of splendid settings abroad.
What was
so urgent or
pressing
to talk about?
Or were they just
prattlers
happiest when prattling
in stentorian
voices?
Is it the establishment
that employs men who are
uncomfortable
with silence?
Or is it in the Indian
psyche
to shun silence
and revel
in noise?
I wondered when
we would
learn
to appreciate art.
— Beginning this week,
veteran journalist S. Nihal Singh will pen a column in verse.
