BORN in far-away Albania, Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu came to India to become a part of the devout Catholic clergy. Answering what she termed a "call", she stayed in one of India’s most populous cities, Kolkata, to serve the city’s poor and destitute. That was the beginning of one of the most spectacular lives of our times — that of Mother Teresa who responded to the call of the Almighty’s to serve mankind. SHE is gorgeous, she is funny and she has a figure to match. Shama Sikander alias Pooja Mehta of Sony’s Yeh Meri Life Hai has all the makings of a worthy successor to a line of Muslim beauties like from Madhubala, Suraiya and Nargis. Life’s been a roller-coaster ride for this bubbly girl who’s pursued stardom with a single-minded devotion. "Yeh Meri Life Hai gave me my first taste of success," says Shama who earlier did cameos in Bollywood duds like Mann, Prem Agan, Ansh and Patth. "Playing a middle class girl with big dreams in Yeh Meri Life Hai is quite like my own story. I come from a middle class background and have gone through the grind. That’s why I relate to the character so closely," says Shama. Indeed, she does. If in the serial, Pooja wants to become as good a director as Karan Johar, then real-life Shama wants to emulate the success of Sridevi — not on TV but in films. — NF |
