Bill of rites
Jaspal Bhatti

THE National Commission for Women has prepared a draft bill to make the registration of marriage compulsory. "What’s the need of such a bill?" asked Sharmaji. I told him that this would go a long way in controlling bigamy. Sharmaji was tense, wondering which fool would attempt buying trouble for the second time if he was already married. "I am not talking about you Sharmaji. There could be some cheats in the society who do not reveal their first marriage."

Sharmaji after thinking for some time asked again, "Do you think that a married man will be forced to wear the registration certificate around his neck so that a innocent woman does not fall prey to his charms?"

I said, "Look Sharmaji, a married man should definitely wear some visible signs like women wear sindhoor in their hair to show that they are married".

Sharmaji laughed at my argument. "When a married man can be recognised by his sad and downtrodden appearance, what is the need of an extra registration certificate?"

I explained, "The registration of marriage will have a great check on child marriage". Sharmaji laughed, "If an underage child can get a fake affidavit for his age to make a driving licence, why can’t we do the same for getting married."
