Khalsa College eves are PU basketball champs
Ludhiana, October 7 Eighteen teams took part in the tournament that began on October 3 and played on knock-out basis. Four teams namely Khalsa College, Ludhiana, MCM DAV College, Chandigarh, Panjab University Campus, Chandigarh, and the Government College for Women, Ludhiana, qualified for the league stage and Khalsa College cagers romped home victorious to lift the title. In the league matches, Khalsa College eves defeated Government College, Ludhiana, 71-27, drubbed MCM DAV College, Chandigarh, 76-41, and thrashed Panjab University Campus, Chandigarh, 66-29, to wrap up the title. MCM DAV College secured the second spot while Panjab University Campus, Chandigarh, had to content with the third position. Mr Teja Singh Dhaliwal, honorary general secretary, Punjab Basketball Association, gave away prizes to the winners. Dr Varinder Kaur, Principal of Khalsa College, congratulated the girls for bringing fame to the college. Ms Sarbarinder Kaur, member of the managing committee, Khalsa Diwan, was among other prominent personalities who attended the prize distribution function. |
Malhotra on cricket selection panel
Ludhiana, October 7 Malhotra played in the Ranji Trophy for a record period of more than two decades and created various batting records during his illustrious career (502 runs in one innings and 1,000 runs in three consecutive innings in 1956). During his playing tenure (1954-1975), Malhotra had also led the Punjab team for about 10 years. According to Mr Vinod Chitkara, honorary general secretary, Ludhiana District Cricket Association (LDCA), a communique from the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA), received by him yesterday read that Mr Chaman Lal Malhotra, Chairman, selection committee, Punjab and Co- Chairperson of the LDCA, has been invited to attend the selection committee meeting to be held at the PCA stadium in Mohali. The selection panel is headed by the national selector and former Test star, Yash Pal Sharma. Other members of the selection panel include Mr Anurag Thakur (Himachal Pradesh), Captain Kumar (Services), Mr Ashok Singh (Jammu and Kashmir) and Mr Rajesh Bawa (Haryana). Mr Sunil Dev, secretary of the Delhi District Cricket Association, has been appointed as the convenor for the meeting. |

A promising speed skater
Jasmine Puri, a 14-year-old skater from Ludhiana, has brought laurels to her city and the state by representing the Indian roller skating team in two international skating meets early this year.
Jasmine, who took to skating at the age of five years, is grateful to her coaches and her parents for the encouragement that ultimately helped her reach this level. A Class IX student of Sacred Heart Convent Senior Secondary School, Sarabha Nagar, Ludhiana, Jasmine started skating while she was in LKG. She was selected to represent India in the Asian skating meet held in Korea in May this year. Later, the Roller Skating Federation of India (RSFI) selected her for the 2005 World Speed Skating (Inline) Championship held at Suzhou, China. She has been regularly winning medals at the district, state and national level speed skating championships. She was declared the best skater of Ludhiana district for 2002. She also won medals in the All-India CBSE Schools Speed Skating Championship. In 2004, she added another feather to her cap by winning a bronze medal in the Open National Championship held at Faridabad in 2004. She is the first girl speed skater from Punjab to win a medal in the Open National Championships in the inline skates category. She was the only girl speed skater from Punjab to have represented India in both Asian and World Speed Skating Championships. Jasmine endows all this credit to Mr JS Dhaliwal her Coach and Mr Bhag Singh her school coach who taught her the first lesson in skating. Jasmine wants to continue donning national colours and was aiming to bag medal in the international speed skating championships in future. She said the exposure at the international level helped her in judging the potential of other skaters. At present, she is preparing for the forthcoming senior national skating meet to be held in Chandigarh in December. |
Office-bearers of LIC sports club
Ludhiana, October 7 The members from all eight local branch offices of the LIC attended the meeting. Mr Ashok Madaan and Mr Sanjiv Kalia have been elected senior vice-president and vice-president, respectively, while Mr Kirti Sharma and Mr Subodh Kumar were elected joint secretary and treasurer, respectively. Mr D.K. Bhagar, Senior Divisional Manager, Ludhiana, is the ex-officio president of the club. Handball association: A meeting to elect new office-bearers of the body was held under the chairmanship of the outgoing president, Mr Ashok Aggarwal. The new team would be in the office for four years. The following are the office bearers: president — Dr Jaswant Singh; senior vice-president — Ms Simarjot Kaur; vice-presidents — Mr B S Brar, Mr Paramjit Singh and Mr Harmesh Khukkar; general secretary — Mr Teja Singh Dhaliwal; joint secretaries — Mr Sumedh Chadha, Dr Ramandeep and Dr Ravinder Singh; and finance secretary — Mr Rupinder Singh. |
