100 senior citizens vow to donate eyes

Chandigarh, October 4
Eyes of more than 50 senior citizens were examined in a camp organised at Kalagram in connection with the Elders’ Day celebration by the Senior Citizens Welfare Association, Modern Housing Complex (Manimajra), here yesterday.

A press note said more than 100 senior citizens decided to donate their eyes at the function.

Mr Jasbir Singh Bir, Managing Director of Citco, was the chief guest at the function and he assured them maximum facilities at the Citco outlets.

Four eminent senior citizens, including Mr Jamuna Dass (aged more than 100 years), Dr M.L. Bansal, Principal, T.S. Bedi and Mr R.K. Bali, a veteran journalist, were honoured and presented with mementoes.

A cultural programme was also organised on the occasion.

St Stephen’s move into finals

St Stephen’s School and Guru Nanak Public School-36 moved into the finals of the under-14 Chandigarh Inter-School Tennis Tournament for boys at St Peter’s School clay courts here today.

In the semi-final contests, St Stephen’s School defeated DAV Senior Secondary School-8 and Guru Nanak Public School-36 prevailed over Guru Harkishan Public School-38 by an 2-1.

The other results are:

Boys under-14 (semi-finals): Guru Nanak Public School-36 b Guru Harkishan School-38 2-1 (Fateh Singh b Tajinder Paul Singh 6-0, 6-0, Harmeet lost to Harpreet Singh 3-6, 6-4, Fateh Singh and Harmeet b Dharminder and Harpreet 6-0, 6-0). St Stephen’s -45 b DAV Senior Secondary School-8 2-1 (Amit Chauhan b Naveen 6-0, 6-1, Raghav Singhal lost to Ajay Yadav 4-6, 6-3, 1-6, Digvijay and Amit Chauhan b Naveen and Ajay Yadav 6-2, 6-3).

Boys under-19 (final): DAV Senior Secondary School-8 vs Government Model Senior Secondary School-16 1-1 (Kinshuk Sharma - DAVSSS-8 - b Gursimran Brar 6-1, 6-0, Simarveer —- GMSSS-16 b Deepinder 6-2, 7-6 (3).

Boys under-17 (semi-finals): St Stephen’s-45 vs St Kabir-26 1-1 and one game all (Abhay Raj (St Kabir) b Akshat Chaudhary 6-2, 6-3, Gurmohit Singh (St Stephen’s) b Yuvresh Bansal 7-5, 6-2, Abhay Raj and Yuvresh vs Gurmohit Singh and Akshat 1-1 (2-6, 7-6 (6).

DAVSSS-8 vs St John’s-26 1-1 (Ashwani (DAVSSS-8) b Gaurav Inder Toor 6-3, 6-4, Mandeep Gill (St John’s) b Chanden Shaulin 7-6 (2), 6-3).

Edmund Rice cricket meet from Oct 8

Chandigarh, October 4
St. John’s High School, Sector 26, Chandigarh, will organise the eighth Blessed Edmund Rice Under-11 Cricket Tournament from October 8. In all, 13 school teams from Chandigarh, Panchkula and Mohali will participate in it.

On the opening day St John’s A will play against Guru Harkrishan School in the first match and in the second match Vivek High School is pitted against YPS, Mohali.

The other team are St Anne’s, Saupin’s (Panchkula), DAV, Sector 15, Chandigarh, St Kabir, Hansraj Public School(Panchkula), Little Flower Convent School (Panchkula), Stepping Stones, AKSIPS, Sector 41, Chandigarh, and St John’s B.

The matches up to the semifinal will be of 20 overs a side and the final to be played on October 23 and will be 25 overs a side.

Ball badminton titles for Manav Mangal

Chandigarh, October 4
The ball badminton teams of Manav Mangal High School, Sector 21 cornered glory by winning both the titles of Boys U-14 and U-17 in the inter-school competitions at St Joseph School, Sector 44, here.

The U-19 boys title was claimed by Shri Guru Gobind Singh Senior Secondary School, Sector 35. The competition was organised by the Education Department, UT, Chandigarh.
