BCM students excel in sports

Ludhiana, October 3
Students of local BCM Senior Secondary School, Chandigarh road branch, performed well in the different sports disciplines during the recently held Punjab state and national level tournaments.

According to Mr S.D. Kalia, Principal of the school, the players from the school brought laurels to their institute for which they deserved appreciation.

Meenakshi Khullar was the member of the Punjab handball team that finished runners-up in the 28th Junior National Handball Championship held in Ernakulam. Karan Gupta, student of class VIII, won silver medal in Punjab Chess Meet (under-14 years) conducted in Moga while five girls and an equal number of boys of the school represented Ludhiana district in the Punjab Inter-District Basketball Tournament (under-14) held in Gurdaspur.

Two cagers of the school — Gagandeep Kaur and Aseem Hans — were selected for the National Basketball Championship to be held in Pondicherry.

Mr Kalia congratulated the players for their performance and wished them good luck for future tournaments.

Kuljinder adjudged best gymnast

Ludhiana, October 3
Kuljinder Singh, student of class XII, A.S. Senior Secondary School, Khanna, has been performing consistently in gymnastics for the past couple of years. The seventeen-year-old gymnast was declared the second best in the under-19 years age group during the 51st Punjab State Schools Inter-District Gymnastics Tournament held last week in Jalandhar.

Kuljinder bagged one gold medal (pomell horse), one silver (Roman rings) and one bronze medal (table vault) and was instrumental in Ludhiana district's finishing third in the tournament. The other members of the Ludhiana team from the same school were Gursewak Singh, Upjinder Singh and Gurdeep Singh.

The Sports School of Jalandhar and Jalandhar district secured the first and second positions, respectively, in the tournament.

On the basis of his performance in Jalandhar, Kuljinder has been selected for a camp to be conducted for national gymnastics. The nationals are slated to be held in the last month of the year. Mr K.K. Sharma, Principal of the school, Mr Bhupinder Singh, coach, Mr Arjan Dass, teacher in-charge of the school gymnastic team, and Mr Rattan Kumar, secretary, Ludhiana District Gymnastics Association, have congratulated Kuljinder for his outstanding performance.

Mr Sharma honoured the upcoming gymnast on the school campus today. He also handed over a demand draft for Rs 6,600 to Kuljinder which was announced as scholarship last year by the Sports Authority of India under its scheme to encourage talented sportspersons in the country.

Hockey tournament begins

Ludhiana, October 3
The Jagraon Police, Shaheed Udham Singh Sports Club, Sahnewal, and the Gill Club of Gawadhi recorded victories in their respective matches in the 6th Bibi Surjit Kaur Memorial Six-a-Side Hockey League Tournament, which began at Mata Sahib Kaur Stadium, Jarkhar village, about 10 km from here, today.

In the first match, Shaheed Udham Singh Sports Club, beat Harpal Club of Kila Raipur 5-3. Pargat Singh and Charanjit Singh scored a brace each while Tarlochan Singh found the target once for the winners. For Kila Raipur, Jyoti scored two goals and Jagjeet Singh scored one goal.

In the second match, Gill Club thrashed Mata Sahib Kaur Academy of Jarkhar 12-4. Ravinder Singh scored eight goals, including a double hat-trick, while Kanwaljit Singh and Gurmit Singh added two goals each to Gill Club’s victory.

The third match was played between Jagraon Police and Bahadurgarh XI in which the former romped home victorious without facing much resistance. The final score read 10-1. Earlier, Mr Dashmesh Singh, Managing Director, Dashmesh Public School, inaugurated the tournament.

Football, weightlifting trials on Oct 5

Ludhiana, October 3
Trials to select the Ludhiana football and weightlifting probables (boys under-16) will be held at Guru Nanak Stadium here on October 5 from 9 am onwards.

According to Mr Gianinder Singh, District Sports Officer, boys born on or after January 1, 1990, were eligible to take part in the trials.

Interested players have been asked to bring along their age-proof certificates.

The selected players will participate in the Punjab State Rural Games to be held in Ferozepore from October 14 to 16.

Punjab circle win in basketball

Ludhiana, October 3
Hosts and last year's runners-up Punjab circle began their campaign on a rousing note recording a comprehensive win 75-52 over West Bengal circle in the inaugural match of the 19th All-India Postal Basketball Tournament, which began at Guru Nanak Stadium here today.

In the second match, Rajasthan circle registered an easy 52-29 victory over Orissa. Earlier, Mr K.L. Khanna, Postmaster General, Punjab and UT Chandigarh, inaugurated the tournament in which team from seven circles — Punjab, West Bengal, Rajasthan, Orissa, Haryana, Tamil Nadu and Rajasthan — are taking part.
