Sukhmani students win PTU badminton trophy
Mohali, October 3 The team consisted of Tanu Aggarwal, Sonal Sharda, Snimere and Anupama Saini. In quarter-finals, SSIET beat Chitkara Institute of Engineering and Technology, Rajpura (CIET), by two games to one. In the semi-finals Tanu Aggarwal of SSIET beat Divya of Beant College of Engineering and Technology, Gurdaspur (BCET) by 11-3, 11-1, while in doubles Tanu and Sonal of SSIET beat Diviya and Grima of BCET, Gurdaspur by 15-5, 15-2. In the finals SSIET Dera Bassi beat Institute of Engineering and Technology, Bhaddal (IET). Tanu Aggarwal won the first singles by 8-11, 11-1, 11-5. In the doubles Tanu and Sonal of SSIET beat Ruchika and Poonam of IET Bhaddal by 15-13, 15-5. The chairman of institute, Prof Avtar Singh, congratulated the winners and sports officer Surinder Singh. The Principal, Dr I.P. Singh, also congratulated the students. |
Rodrigues opens KVS sports meet
Chandigarh, October 3 Gen S.F. Rodrigues (retd), Governor of Punjab and UT Administrator, declared the meet open. He was welcomed by Mr Rang Lal Jamunda, Commissioner, KVS, New Delhi, and the Assistant Commissioner, KVS, Chandigarh region, Mr S.S. Sehrawat. The KVS flag was hoisted by General Rodrigues. A combined contingent of students from KV 31, KV 47 and KV 3BRD presented a march past in Tricolour formation. Last year’s winner, Delhi region, led the contingent from 18 regions of Delhi, Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Dehra Dun, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jabalpur, Jaipur, Jammu, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Patna, Silchar and the host, Chandigarh region. This year’s KVS National Sports Meet witnessed a first-time display of the sacred torch ceremony. Four torch bearers, two from either side of the inner field, took lighted torches around the stadium. The opening ceremony was followed by a variety of cultural items, including a dance sequence on Vande Mataram, presented by KV-2, Chandimandir. This was followed by a colourful Haryanvi dance by KV-47. Dandiya was a synchronised display of Dandiya raas by students of KV-3, Ambala Cantt. With this, the first round of matches was started at all venues, including Chandigarh, Chandimandir, Zirakpur and Patiala. |
7,000 turn up for KVS sports meet
Chandigarh, October 3 KVS, Zirakpur: The sports meet commenced here with the inaugural girls league hockey match between Chandigarh and Dehra Dun. The latter emerged winner by one goal, which was scored by Preeti. Earlier, the meet was declared open by its Brig G.D. Chadda, Commander, 474 Engg Brigade, after a march past by 11 regional teams. KVS, Sector 29: In the table tennis (boys), Chandigarh thrashed Bhopal and Jammu by 3-0 each in the under-17 and under-19 categories at the table tennis hall, Sector 23, here. The other winners in the u-17 category were Kolkata, Bangalore, Dehra Dun, Patna and Silcher, whereas in the under-19 category Bangalore, Delhi, Lucknow, Chennai, Dehra Dun, Mumbai and Bhopal won their respective matches. In badminton (boys, u-14) Dehra Dun won the singles and doubles matches by beating Hyderabad. In u-17 Mumbai got walkover against Bhubaneswar while Bhopal beat Delhi in the singles and doubles matches. KVS, GC-CRPF, Pinjore: The school conducted league matches (pool-wise) in handball and chess. Mumbai thrashed Silcher 40-13 in pool A, whereas Jammu, Dehra Dun and Delhi emerged winners in pools B, C and D in handball. KVS, Sector 47: Girls comprising 18 regional teams will participate in the national meet here. Competitions in table tennis and badminton were organised at the table tennis hall, Sector 23, and badminton hall, Sector 42, here. KVS No. 1, Ambala Cantt: In handball Chandigarh, Lucknow, Dehra Dun and Patna were declared winners whereas in basketball Lucknow, Bangalore, Kolkata Mumbai, Hyderabad and Chennai won their respective matches. Chennai beat Delhi in u-14 and u-17 matches. KVS, No. 2, Ambala Cantt: The school conducted football matches in which Mumbai and Silcher beat Jammu and Guwahati, respectively. Delhi and Hyderabad lost to Chandigarh and Chennai, respectively, whereas Patna and Lucknow had a draw. In kabbadi Patna, Dehra Dun, Delhi, Banglore, Bhopal, Jaipur beat Bhubaneswar, Silcher, Guwahati, Mumbai and Jabalpur, respectively. Kendriya Vidyalaya No. 1, Patiala Cantt: The kho-kho and volleyball events were held here. Bangalore, Jammu, Chandigarh and Bhubaneswar won in kho-kho against Dehra Dun, Mumbai, Ahmedabad and Chennai, respectively. In volleyball Patna, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Dehra Dun beat Chandigarh, Chennai, Bhubaneswar and Ahmedabad, respectively. Kendriya Vidyalaya No. 1, Chandimandir Cantt, organised shotput and high jump competitions. The day concluded with cultural evening at the venues. |
Workshop for soccer coaches
Chandigarh, October 3 Earlier, Chandigarh Olympic Association Senior vice-president Chandersekhar inaugurated a 10-day youth development coach education workshop being conducted by the Chandigarh Football Association (CFA) under the patronage of the All-India Football Federation at DAV Senior Secondary School in Sector 8. CFA president Ravinder Talwar said the AIFA had provided a good opportunity to Indian coaches to learn the latest coaching techniques. During the practical training at the Sector 17 Football Stadium, 48 youngsters (under-14 and under-17), invited by the CFA, would be motivated to adopt soccer. Spittler explained how to motivate beginners and demonstrated shooting and running techniques. CFA secretary Rakesh Bakshi said a few girls would also be invited to join the workshop. “This decision has been taken as a number of schools and colleges have been showing keen interest in raising girls soccer teams and they also compete in the state and other tournaments on a regular basis.” |

Admin to tap human resources through coops
Chandigarh, October 3 The project as envisaged by Gen S.F. Rodrigues (retd), UT Administrator, will largely empower the under privileged living in the slums and villages. Under the project, trained persons in various trades will be encouraged to form cooperatives and self-help groups. A directory of trained people in various trades will also be compiled and made available to the public to enable them to avail of the services. Special classes, even during the second shift, will be started in educational and technical institutes to help those concerned to get the required training. It has been decided that a control room will be set up at Panchayat Bhavan to serve as a centre for display and sale of products and booking of orders. The newly formed cooperatives will provide relevant training to the students, which will be relevant to business and industry in the area and develop their capabilities. Further, the policy also lays emphasis on the integration of the under privileged with the general community. |
