She is in Panchkula these days with her coach, Dronacharya awardee SM Arif, to train with the local shuttlers.

Shruti is the undisputed doubles queen of Indian badminton, enriching the Indian women’s doubles badminton.

In partnership with another gutsy girl Jwala Gutta, she has pocketed many titles in women’s doubles and represented India in Uber Cup, Asian meets and other international tournaments as a woman ambassador of the Indian badminton.

Shruti, a Keralite, was born and brought up in Andhra Pradesh and as she said it was her good luck to have found a guardian in Mr Arif, a versatile badminton coach, at Fateh Maidan stadium, Hyderabad. Mr Arif moulded Shruti to face the big challenges in this sport where doubles event was a thing of the past.

Playing with Pullela Gopi Chand, Jwala and host of other talented and reputed players, all based in Hyderabad, Shruti matured into a fine doubles specialist though she has also played in singles events.

When asked as to how she felt about the new rally-point system to be experimented in the forthcoming mini and sub-junior nationals on the recommendations of the International Badminton Federation, she said it would definitely give a new direction to the sport and make it more market-oriented. Her coach echoed the same views.

On playing with junior players of Panchkula and the facilities, she said the experience was excellent and also hoped that more champions would come from this small city where badminton seemed to be very popular.

She said few boys here were very talented but they also needed to be polished so as to do well in the national tournaments. When asked if she missed her partner Jwala who is training in Denmark, Shruti said everyone should avail of the chance and she was happy Jwala got the opportunity.
