Grandma Waheeda dances again

Crossover cinema will gain some classic appeal as Waheeda Rehman plays grandma and spouse to Girish Karnad in debutant Girish Acharya’s Brides Wanted. The usually reticent Rehman sailed through the press, recently, with her famed grace.

"This is my second Indian-English film, Guide was first shot in English", she said. Brides Wanted revolves around an NRI (Anuj Sawhney), who comes to India in search of a bride. Channel (V) veejay Sarah Jane, will be making her debut in this flick.

Now while the storyline sounds suspiciously like Gurinder Chadha’s Bride and Prejudice, here’s something that should be a treat: Rehman is likely to be part of a dance sequence.

"All grandmothers dance in marriages in India," she shrugs. None quite like you, lady who mesmerised the audience with her scintillating dance performances in Teesri Kasam and Chetan Anand’s Guide. MF

Title claims

EVER wondered why some titles of films get repeated time and again? At least five Hindi films have been made with titles Dushman, Dillagi and Fareb. They seem to be Bollywood’s luckiest, and naturally, most favourite titles till date.

Next came Baazi and Ankhen. Four films have been made on these titles. Then there are titles like Andaaz and Waqt (with or without taglines), which keep cropping up and are not necessarily remakes of one or the other.

There are people who block so-called "lucky" titles with the IMPPA (Indian Motion Pictures Producers’ Association) and then put them up for sale at huge sums. Filmmakers tend to get on a title-blocking spree, lest someone else starts shooting with one of them.

For instance, while registering his film Munnabhai MBBS, Vidhu Vinod Chopra blocked the titles, Munnabhai LLB and Munnabhai MD. — MF
