15 PCS officers meet PAU Vice-Chancellor
Tribune News Service

Ludhiana, September 11
Fifteen newly appointed PCS officers (Executive Branch), attending a training course at the PAU, on Friday held a meeting with Dr K.S. Aulakh, Vice-Chancellor of Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana. Addressing the officers, Dr Aulakh gave the history of the PAU and highlighted the role of this university in ushering the Green Revolution.

He said Punjab nowadays was the leading state in producing foodgrains. He added that 95 per cent area of the cultivated land of the state was under irrigation which has made its yield level higher. Dr Aulakh said the Punjab farmers used to use 1 kg fertilizer per acre in 1960-61 but now 195 kg fertilizer was being used.

Dr Aulakh expressed concern over the depletion in ground waterlevel and over mechanisation in Punjab. The input costs of agriculture in Punjab are very high but the net return from the agriculture is less. Dr Aulakh said 50 per cent farmers of Punjab earn less than an ordinary peon.

In order to overcome the situation, Dr Aulakh advised to divert 10 lakh hactare area under paddy cultivation to other profitable crops like summer moong, maize, soybean, cotton, oilseeds crops etc. Early sowing of paddy proves to be costly as 1,200 litre of water is required for growing 1 kg of paddy. He said it was the need of the hour to divert more area to grow vegetables and fruits also. He advised the farmers to reduce the cost of cultivation. Talking about the subsidies, Dr Aulakh said the advanced countries are supporting their farmers by providing them high subsidies.

Proposing vote of thanks, Mr M.P. Singh, OSD to the Chief Minister of Punjab, said through this five-day training course, they would be able to know the real problems being faced by the farmers. The government should take some measures to solve these problems. Mr Singh appreciated the achievements made by the PAU in the field of agricultural research.

Dr S.P. Mehra, Additional Director of Extension Education, said this training would definitely prove to be fruitful for these newly appointed Officers.
