Ryanites win music contest

Ludhiana, September 8
Ryanites of Ryan International School walked off with the first prize in the music competition held to mark the anniversary of Sadhu Sunder Singh held at the Issa Nagar playground on this weekend. A number of schools had participated in this “anand utsav”.

The students of RIS carved out a niche for themselves with their lilting music, both in the English and Hindi song categories and at the senior and junior levels. The senior students walked off with the first prize in the English category and the junior group won the second prize in the Hindi category.

Lecture on HR

The Political Science Department of S.D.P. College for Women, Ludhiana, organised an extension lecture on human rights here yesterday. The officiating Principal, Mrs Shashi Bindal, welcomed the guest speaker, Dr. Suresh Tandon, Principal of Gobindgarh Public College, Khanna.

The students attended the lecture with zeal in a large number. Mrs Gopa Gupta, H.OD, thanked the worthy speaker.

Tree plantation

A tree plantation drive was carried out by Pratap Public School , here today under its principal Dr Ramesh Inder Kaur Bal. Two hundred saplings were planted by students of Classes VI to IX. The principal told them about the importance of trees in everyday life.

Freshers’ party

The University Institute of Law Panjab University Regional Centre organised a freshers’ party here in Panjab University Extension Library . This party was hosted by students of II and III year LLB. The function was presided over by Prof. JK Chauhan, Director. Faculty members, non-teaching members and library staff attended the function.

A cultural programme comprising skits and dances was also held. The Director welcomed the freshers on behalf of everyone present and wished them a fruitful stay. A contest to hold Mr and Ms Fresher was also organised.

Khanna, Jagraon boys win kabaddi matches

Ludhiana, September 8
Khanna and Jagraon zone boys recorded victories in their respective kabaddi matches in the boys (u-19) of the Ludhiana Schools Inter-Zonal Tournament being organised at different venues here today. Khanna lads piped Samrala zone 68-50 while Jagraon zone proved too good for Gill zone who they drubbed 62-44. In another match, Gujjarwal zone defeated Sahnewal zone.

Other results: kho-kho (u-17) — Khanna zone prevailed over Gujjarwal; Jagraon zone outclassed Gill zone; Raikot zone beat PAU zone; Sahnewal zone outnumbered Samrala zone, Gujjarwal zone beat Gill zone; and Jagraon zone beat Khanna zone.

Kabaddi (u-14) — Samrala zone beat PAU zone; Raikot zone beat Jagraon zone; Gujjarwal zone beat Sahnewal zone; Jagraon zone beat Samrala zone; and Raikot zone beat PAU zone.

Handball (u-17) — PAU zone beat Khanna zone 18-2, Gujjarwal zone beat Raikot zone 14-9, Gill zone beat Samrala zone 15-2, PAU zone beat Raikot zone 12-3; and Gujjarwal zone beat Khanna zone 11-4.

Volleyball (u-17) — Khanna zone beat PAU zone, Khanna zone beat Raikot zone, Raikot zone beat Gujjarwal zone, Gujjarwal zone beat PAU zone, Jagraon zone beat Sahnewal zone and Gill zone beat Samrala zone.

Hockey — PAU zone beat Jagraon zone 4-2, Sahnewal zone beat Khanna zone 6-0 and Gujjarwal zone beat Raikot zone 5-0.

Principal Amarjit Kaur Gill of Gill village was the chief guest today. Mr Sohan Singh Pannu, Assistant Education Officer, Ludhiana, Mr Rupinder Singh Ravi, secretary, tournament committee, Mr Gurvinder Singh Kila Raipur and Mr Dalvinder Singh Minhas were also present on the occasion.

KABADDI MEET: The annual 40th kabaddi tournament, organised by the Manki Sports Club, will be held from October 28-30 at Manki village, according to Mr Satnam Singh Satta, chairman of the club, here on Monday. — OC

Ludhiana badminton meet from Sept 10

Ludhiana, September 8
The Ludhiana District Badminton Association will organise Ludhiana Senior Men’s Badminton Double’s Championship here at Shastri Hall near Guru Nanak Stadium on September 10 and 11, according to Mr Anupam Kumaria, general secretary of the association.

This was decided at a meeting of the association held under the chairmanship of Mr Kidar Nath Malhotra here yesterday. The championship will be dedicated to the memory of the former national doubles champion, Harish Kumar, who died in a road accident last year in Kolkata. A cash grant of Rs 25,000 will be given to the widow of late shuttler who had been facing an acute financial crisis. Mr Kumaria said.
