Chandigarh beat Panchkula in cricket

Panchkula, September 8
Chandigarh team began its campaign with style when it defeated Panchkula district by a convincing margin of 82 runs in the Haryana State Inter District Cricket Tournament for under 15 section played at the JR Institute of Cricket Technology, Barwala, near Panchkula, here today.

After winning the toss, Chandigarh opted to bat first with opener Tanvir Manak and Vipul Chandha making a total score are 32. Rohit Singh and Sahil Chauhan scored of 36 and 24 runs, respectively. After the departure of Sahil Chauhan it was Angad Singh who took charge and moved the team’s to 115 runs in 29 overs by scoring 40 runs. Chandigarh scored 163 runs for the loss of five wickets in allotted 35 overs.

In reply, Panchkula district were bundled out for 82 runs in 23.3 overs.

Brief scores; Chandigarh district: 163 runs for five in 35 overs (Sahil Chauhan 24, Rohit Singh 36, Angad Singh 40).

Panchkula district: 82 runs all out in 23.3 overs (Amanpreet Singh 12, Vijay Dhiman 15, Mohit Rana 3 for 27, Nipun Kumar 3 for 15).

In another tie played at Yamunanagar, Ambala district downed Yamunanagar by a margin of 88 runs. Now Ambala will play with Chandigarh on September 10.

Shishu Niketan win Kho Kho opener

It was a day of the host on the opening day of the CBSE Cluster XIII Kho Kho tournament being held on Shishu Niketan School grounds, here today.

Shishu Niketan Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 22, eves outclassed AK S International Public School, Sector 41, girls with 12 points on the opening day of the CBSE Cluster XIII Kho Kho tournament .

In the boys category too, the host toppled Spring Field, Ambala, with 3 points.

Mr D.S. Mangat, DPI (Schools), Chandigarh Administration, presided over the meet.

Other results in the tournament were as follows.

Girls category: National Public School, Kurali bt APJ School, Kharar (9 points) Guru Nanak Senior Secondary School-30 w/o Sahibzada Ajit Singh Academy.

Air Force School, 12 Wing Chandigarh bt SMS, Barara (1 point)

Boys: SD Public School -32 bt Guru Nanak Senior Secondary School-30 (12points).

National Public School, Kurali bt DAV-8 (5 points) Air Force 12 Wing bt DAV Public School-15 (1 point) Chandigarh Baptist School-45 w/o Air Force School, 3 BRD.

Rahul, Bipul crack tons

Centuries by Rahul Arora (106) and Bipul Sharma (105) helped Chandigarh pile up mammoth 398 runs in the first innings against Ludhiana in the second match of the pool of the Katoch Shield Tournament for the year 2005-06 at DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, here today.

Ludhiana won the toss and put Chandigarh to bat. Rahul Arora 106 (13x4 and 2x6), Bipul Sharma 105 (14x4 and 1x6), Sarul Kanwar 41 and Viswas Bhalla 25 and Akashdeep 55 (5x4,1x6) were the main scorers for Chandigarh. Ashish Sehgal 2 for 51 and Lovablish 2 for 79, Jasdeep Singh 2 for 67 were the successful bowlers for Ludhiana.

Ludhiana will start their innings tomorrow morning.

Sec 11 Govt College victorious

Government College, Sector 11, beat Government College, Zira, by 18-11 in the first match of the PU Inter-College Handball Tournament (2005-06) at Sri Guru Gobind Singh College, Sector 26, here today.

In the second match, GGD SD College, Chandigarh, got walk over DAV College, Abohar.

The other results are as follows: Arya College, Ludhiana, b GTC College, Allour, 13-11; Khalsa College, Gursarsudhar of Ludhiana, b LRDAV College, Jagraon, 21-8.

KVS sports meet

Chandigarh, September 8
The Regional Sports meet of the Kendriya Vidyalaya, Pinjore, in handball and chess will be held on September 10 and 11. As many as 200 students drawn from various KVS from Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh would take part in the competitions. In chess, the events will be held in under 14,17 and 19 sections.

Panchkula: Elaborate arrangements are being made by Kendriya Vidyalaya -2 for the 36th KVS Regional Athletic Meet at Devi Lal Sports Complex, Sector 3 (Panchkula).

Students of 58 Kendriya Vidyalayas of the Chandigarh region will participate. Board and lodging arrangements for over 800 players have been made in KV I and II, Chandimandir Cantt.

Competitions in various events, including race shot put, high jump, long jump and hurdles, will be held from September 17 to 19.

Colonel V.N. Money, Chairman, VMC, will preside. The guest of honour will be Mr J.P. Gupta (EO), KVS, Chandigarh region.

CLTA trainees excel in Lahore

CLTA trainees continue to show good performance in the Junior International Tennis Tournament being played in Lahore, Pakistan, from September 5 to 10.

In the Boys Singles Semi Finals, Kinshuk Sharma beat Anshuman Datta 6-4, 0-6, 6-4. He will now be playing against Top Seed Sumit Prakash Gupta, also from India. Kinshuk also reached the Doubles Finals of the tournament pairing with Thailand player Issara Khunpol. In the Girls Doubles event, Inayat Khosla playing with Jawairiah Noordin of Malaysia reached the finals of the Doubles event.

In the previous version of the tournament at Islamabad, Kinshuk Sharma, who is a student of DAV Public School, Sector 8, Chandigarh, was runners-up in both singles and doubles events. Inayat Khosla was winner in the Girls Doubles section.

MCA post win

The Mohali Cricket Association (MCA) outplayed St John’s Cricket Academy by two wickets in the First Lukesh Thakur Memorial under 10 Cricket tournament to enter the final of the tournament at Stepping Stones School, Sector 37, here today. The second semi-final between the MCM Academy and Saupin’s School will be held at 3 pm tomorrow.

Brief scores:St John’s CA;128 runs for six in 20 overs (Sidhant 16, Jayant 17, Sahil 28, Vardan 39, Pukhraj 3 for 26, Jagjit 2 for 24).

MCMA: 129 runs for eight in 19.3 overs (Mayank 34,Pukhraj 33, Jasinder 10, Sidharth 4 for 16, Sanjog 2 for 23).

Dodgeball tourney from tomorrow

The Ropar District Dodgeball Association is conducting the first Ropar District Dodgeball Championship on September 10 and 11 at Government Senior Secondary School, Phase 3B1, here.

As many as 14 teams of various clubs and schools will participate in the inaugural championship. The participating teams have been directed to report to Harbans Singh, DPE of the school, at 11 am on September 10.

Sport bodies to protest

The All India Forward Bloc and a number of sports organisations and players from various educational institutions drawn from regional states will march to the Hockey Stadium, Sector 42, tomorrow in protest against changing the name of Netaji Subhas Northern Centre, Chandigarh, to Chaudhary Devi Lal Regional Centre.

Mr V.P. Saini, national secretary and convener of the northern India unit of the Bloc, said the shifting of Netajj Subhas SAI Northern Centre from Chandigarh to a village in Sonepat was also another reason for their protest. The protestors will assemble at ground opposite the Government College for Women, Sector 42, at 10 am tomorrow.

Landran college win in weightlifting

Chandigarh, September 8
Students of Chandigarh Engineering College, Landran, Ropar district, bagged six gold medals, four silver and four bronze medals in the Punjab Technical University Inter-College Weightlifting and Best Physique Championship held here today.

According to Mr Satnam Singh Sandhu, Chairman of the college, they won three gold medals, a silver medal and two bronze medals in weightlifting while a gold medal, two silver medal and a bronze medal were won in the best physique championship.

Damandeep Samra, Bikram Singh Sandhu and Aman Rajput won gold medals in weightlifting while Amandeep Cheema won a silver medal. Parmod Malhotra and Pritpal Singh got a bronze medal each.

In the powerlifting competition, Amandeep Cheema and Bikram Sandhu won a gold medal each while Jagjeet Singh won a silver medal and Damandeep Samra won a bronze medal.

In the best physique championship, Surjeet Kumar won a gold medal, Bikram Singh and Rahul Dahiya won a silver medal each while Pritpal Singh won a bronze. Last year, students of this Chandigarh Engineering College had won five medals, including three gold, one silver and one bronze.

Varinder back as SP, Mohali

Mr Varinder Singh, PPS, has been brought back as SP, Mohali, replacing Mr Pawan Kumar Rai, IPS, who had joined here less than a month ago.

Earlier, Mr Rai had replaced Mr Varinder Singh as SP, Mohali. According to orders issued by the Department of Home this evening, Mr Rai would be joining as SP City (II), Jalandhar, where Mr Varinder Singh had been posted.

A traditionally IPS post, following the transfer of Mr Rakesh Agarwal, IPS, Mr Varinder Singh had been posted here. However, he was shifted to Jalandhar within weeks of his joining here replacing him with Mr Rai.
