Monsoon can spell trouble for you
Kuldip Bhatia

Ludhiana, August 26
Sultry conditions during monsoon bring along with them a number of skin problems that need special care. Preventive measures and timely treatment are needed in case of affliction with some ailment.

According to Dr Alka Dogra, Professor and Head, Department of Skin and VD, Dayanand Medical College and Hospital, such a weather is conducive to spread of fungal and bacterial infections.

During such a weather, one can develop fungal infection if dirty water remains in contact with feet for prolonged durations. Fungus between the toes can cause burning and itching. As a preventive step, one should clean the feet properly and use anti-fungal dusting powder.

Further, wearing of wet shoes for prolonged periods with nylon socks should be avoided. Wearing cotton socks and open footwear should be preferred and those having allergy should not use rubber or plastic footwear.

Dr Dogra cautions against staying in wet clothes over long periods as it can give rise to fungal or bacterial infections. Body folds should be dried up as soon as possible and anti-fungal talcum should be applied on sides of the neck, the underarm and between legs.

“The rate of hair fall tends to increase during monsoon and around 50 hair can fall everyday during this season. In order to check abnormal hair fall, frequent use of hair dryer should be avoided and instead a dry or steamed towel should be wrapped to dry the hair.”

“In addition, too much oil or gel should be avoided as it can cause acne eruptions on the face. For treating boils around hair follicles, which are quite common during this season, well-diluted shampoos with anti-bacterial agents should be used while taking bath.”

Generalised itching of the body is very common during rainy season because of mosquito and insect bites.

At times, people can suffer from urticarial wheals also. It is advisable to wear loose-fit cotton clothes to cover the exposed parts. For relief from itching, calamine lotion can be applied on affected parts, along with taking some anti-allergic medicine (like cetrizine 10 mg per day).
