Patient dies after operation, hospital denies negligence
Mohali, August 26 The Fortis management has, however, vehemently refuted these charges stating that their patient Trilok Chand was an elderly man who had come to them following a heart attack and multiple problems and despite their best efforts to save him, they were unable to do so because of a post-operative complication. Fortis authorities added that his surgery was a high-risk surgery and his attendants had been duly informed about his serious condition. Mr Arun Kathpalia, son of Trilok Nath, stated that their father was admitted to the hospital last month following a heart attack and an angiography was done on him. A team of doctors of the hospital suggested that the patient be operated upon immediately. The family alleged that they wanted to take a second opinion from a hospital in Delhi but were not given the CD that contained the angiography report despite repeated requests. They also alleged that the doctors seemed to have recorded the report on a re-used CD since it also carried the name of a woman patient. The Fortis authorities, however, categorically stated that no request for the CD was made nor was a re-used CD used for the angiography report. This was a baseless allegation since the CD was used only once and only carried Trilok Nath’s report. The family further alleged that while doctors in the hospital had recommended immediate surgery, their father was kept in the CCU for four days before the surgery took place. Fortis clarified this point stating that the patient had to be medically optimised before the surgery could be performed for which he had to be admitted to the CCU before the surgery. The family alleged that their father developed an abdominal problem following the surgery but neither the doctors nor the hospital staff bothered to control it. The Fortis Hospital however states that due care was taken of the problem after the surgery and the patient’s condition was closely monitored and treated conservatively. Trilok Chand was shifted to the ICU following deterioration in his condition and when his condition improved after five days, he was shifted back to his room. However, according to the family, their father’s body had swollen and his condition worsened. They alleged that the doctors “turned a blind eye to his condition”. The family alleged that the next morning when the nurses came to change the bed sheets, they turned their father on his side following which he began to sink and ultimately died. The hospital, on the other hand, pointed out that the patient died due to circulatory collapse caused by a fatal arrhythmia which is not uncommon in such patients and despite the hospital staff’s best efforts he could not be saved. |
